Teacher disciplined for racial comment (NM -- immigration)

GALLUP — A Gallup Junior High School teacher is having personnel action taken against it for making a racially derogatory comment against a Hispanic student.

On Tuesday afternoon, the teacher, whose name school officials refused to release, allegedly made a comment to an eighth-grade student asking if he was "legal" and whether or not he had papers.

The student had missed school on Monday, and was asked if he was absent because he participated in the march against Proposition 4437. The student said he had stayed at home. Following the student's answer the teacher then allegedly began asking questions about whether he was a legal citizen.

Principal Frank Chiapetti could not confirm the details of the incident, but did confirm that the incident was regarding a comment about a Hispanic child. He said an investigation was completed Earlier this week.

"Action will be taken," said Chiapetti. Statements from the student and teacher, as well as other students...

The aunt of the student, who did not want to release her name or the name of her nephew, said that he came home from school that day and told his parents what had happened.

Because the student's parents speak only Spanish, the aunt spoke on behalf of her sister's son.

Because it is against personnel policies, Chiapetti could not disclose what specific actions will be taken against the teacher, but that school board policy was followed.

The student's family did participate in the marches against Proposition 4437, which started on Monday and ended on Thursday evening.

<< snip >>

"We promote an environment of tolerance of belonging in the schools," said John Overheim, assistant principal.

The school may have a special meeting to remind teachers and staff of the sensitivity of the current issues.

The federal government could stop this illegal invasion - if they wanted to.

They don't want to.

Dane was pointing a finger at lawyers on another illegal alien thread. Here it looks like teachers are the `strawman.'
Stick to the issue, FRiend.

Dane is strongly in favor of illegals being in America. Dane also structures his/her comments in such a way as to try to bait the person he/she posts to. There is no possiblity of an intelligent exchange with Dane on this issue, that's why I blew him/her off.

Every student in any public school should have to prove thet ARE LEGAL. How did it get to this point where a student's citizenship cannot be asked?

There was nothing "racially derogatory" in anything the teacher said.

I'd think that if anything, the teachers' union would pull his chestnuts out of the fire.
The question appears to me to be: is it improper for a teacher to ask a student if he is an American, or New Mexican, so that he has a right to the benefit of an education paid for by American taxpayers.
I see the term `gringo' thrown about by people who should know better; when I first saw the post, I thought the teacher had applied a pejorative term to the student.
It looks like `political correctness or `mau-mauing'.

Actually, IMO, it should not be the teacher doing the asking, but the school administration when a student is registered. But that won't happen either, except to give illegals special benefits, like in-state tuition at state colleges.

Bullseye. When do you think that REAL Americans will say enough is enough and not allow this type of true racism in our country any longer.

"Come to America. Come legally, learn English, become AMERICAN or get the hell out. "

I was forwarded the following and your statement reminded me of it. Sums it all up pretty well.

The Chicago Daily Tribune, p. 4
7 January 1919

NEW YORK, Jan. 6. -- What was the last public statement by Col. Roosevelt was read last night at an "All-American concert" here under the auspices of the American Defense society, of which he was honorary president.

"I cannot be with you and so all I can do is to wish you Godspeed," it read. "There may be no sagging back in the fight for Americanism merely because the war is over.

"There are plenty of persons who have already made the assertion that they believe the American people have a short memory and that they intend to revive all the foreign associations which more directly interfere with the complete Americanization of our people. Our principle in this matter should be absolutely simple.

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact and American and nothing but an American.

"If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American.

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, and American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people." -Theodore Roosevelt

Actually, I don't think the teacher should approach the student. The student isn't at fault here. This is an issue between the school and the parents. I think that approaching the student has no positive gain, and can only make the student feel bad, (even if he were a legal American).
But the issue SHOULD be persued with the parents. Obviously it won't.

It's more likely it will (and it should) be pursued with his aunt, since neither of the parents speak English. "It" being, when are the folks are being taken back south, if they are Mexican nationals here illegally.
I was in junior high and my family moved from San Antonio to Oklahoma, and some Okies (in this town where I was born) were asking me "Why do you roll up your jeans, like ****** Texan. We fought, became fast friends and that was the end of it. If that kid was hurt, he's a hot-house plant.
Here's a plan: Deport all illegal aliens. Sure some feelings are going to be hurt, but that's just too bad.

What would they do in Mexico? Hmm? Can Mexican teacher ask a non-Hispanic pupil his/her status? What would happen if the student and parents are illegal in Mexico?

Oh yeah! Gallup, NM. The armpit of the world! My "EX" is a City Councilman in Gallup.

Believe it or not, Gallup had over 200 illegals participate in the May Day march. This kid was probably one of them! I think I will call ICE! LOL! I know right where to find him!!

So what did this teacher do wrong? He wants to make sure his students are here legally. That is a problem?
