Democrats pledge probes of Bush, not impeachment
By Andrea Hopkins 10 minutes ago
Democrats will launch a series of investigations of the Bush administration if they take control of Congress in November but are not out to impeach President George W. Bush, a top Democrat said on Sunday.
House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Democrats would hold hearings on the use of intelligence in the lead-up to the Iraq war and investigate the high price of energy and prescription drugs if they win the extra 15 seats they need for a House majority in the mid-term elections.
But Pelosi denied Republican claims that her party would move quickly to impeach Bush.
"I said we'd be having hearings on the war, we'd have hearings. But I don't see us going to a place of impeachment," Pelosi said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press. "Investigation does not equate to impeachment. Investigation is the requirement of Congress. It is about checks and balances."
In Congress, the majority party controls the chairmanship and agenda of all committees, where most laws are drafted and investigative and subpoena power is held.
With Bush's public approval rating at an all-time low and Republicans fearing they could lose control of both houses of Congress in November, Democrats are laying out plans for an aggressive start to the new Congress.
Michigan Rep. John Conyers (news, bio, voting record), the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has called for the creation of committee to recommend grounds for possible impeachment of Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney.
But Pelosi said such a decision rests with her and the Democratic caucus.
"John Conyers is an enthusiastic advocate. I am the leader. Our caucus will decide where we go," she said.

Conyers, McDermott, McKinney (sp?): best arguments I've ever seen for a limited suspension of habeus.
And here the Democrats not only prove themselves to be liars, of course they plan impeachment, but they just can't help themselves and shut up.
Run on impeachment you idiots. The Republicans will get on their knees and thank God for their "enemies".
Democrats shouldn't talk so much about probes..... they'll get Barney Frank all excited for nothing.
On a more serious note, the Republicans have to get real and face up to the critical importance of delivering on conservative issues and winning in 2006 and 2008. The 'Rats are just slobbering to start taking more bites out of American freedoms and the Republicans have not exactly been proving they deserve our support (I'm NOT one of the 13% here who would despair and let the 'Rats have their way, never, but we sure do need to see some major accomplishments from the WH and the Republican Congress..... SOON!).
Democrats still snarl and hiss, but at least they don't drool. I guess that means they're ready to return to the majority again.
Who is Ahmed Omar Abu Ali?
* Ahmed Omar Abu Ali : Ahmed Omar Abu Ali is one of the conspirators in a Bush Assassination plot. Ahmed Omar Abu Ali and his lawyer Ashraf Nubani also defended the terror charity 'Global Relief Foundation.'
1979 : (CONYERS ADDRESSES THE 1st NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE USPC ALONG WITH KGB AGENT ROMESH CHANDRA, HEAD OF THE WPC) In 1979 he [Conyers] addressed the first national conference of the USPC (United States Peace Council) along with Romesh Chandra, a KGB agent, who also headed the WPC (World Peace Council). The USPC was a subsidiary of the WPC which in turn received 90 percent of its funding from the KGB. The organisation was established by the IDCC (International Department of the Central Committee) and the bloodstained Boris Ponomarev was its chief. All of this was an open secret that Conyers also shared. But it did not bother him.
In case anyone is naïve enough to have any doubts about Ponomarev's intentions, which means the Politburo's plans, he issued instructions in 1974 calling on Russia's allies (agents of influence and active KGB agents) within Western political parties to "neutralize" anti-communist leaders, including those in America. ------- "Rep. There are alot of people in PA. that say they won't re-vote for Santorum, but when they get to the polls and they see Casey Jr. and know what he is, they'll end up voting for Santorum....I think anyways....
I know alot of pubbies are upset with the gutless wonders in Washington Doesn't Care, but I can't see them voting for a rat either...and you might be right, they might stay home to 'show them' but I sure would hate to see that, wouldn't you?
All of them are frightening, but this one is particularly so: Harman is, if possible, more stupid than Barbara Boxer, and that's saying something, because Boxer's IQ and my shoe size are identical: 9 and 1/2.
That always amazes me that they think they need to even the score when we have had one republican and one democrat who has been impeached. (Although Nixon resigned, he would have been most likely). I wish that the impeachment talk would stop or we will have every President from here on out being impeached.
If you don't know whether or not your going to sit out the next election, watching Russert interviewing Pelosi on Sunday was the cold water that woke me up.
The Dem plan is simple. Take control and then begin an endless series of investigations and hearings of Republicans. As for her insistence that impeachment is not on the agenda, watch how fast that stance changes if she becomes Speaker of the House.
