Democrats pledge probes of Bush, not impeachment

By Andrea Hopkins 10 minutes ago

Democrats will launch a series of investigations of the Bush administration if they take control of Congress in November but are not out to impeach President George W. Bush, a top Democrat said on Sunday.

House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Democrats would hold hearings on the use of intelligence in the lead-up to the Iraq war and investigate the high price of energy and prescription drugs if they win the extra 15 seats they need for a House majority in the mid-term elections.

But Pelosi denied Republican claims that her party would move quickly to impeach Bush.

"I said we'd be having hearings on the war, we'd have hearings. But I don't see us going to a place of impeachment," Pelosi said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press. "Investigation does not equate to impeachment. Investigation is the requirement of Congress. It is about checks and balances."

In Congress, the majority party controls the chairmanship and agenda of all committees, where most laws are drafted and investigative and subpoena power is held.

With Bush's public approval rating at an all-time low and Republicans fearing they could lose control of both houses of Congress in November, Democrats are laying out plans for an aggressive start to the new Congress.

Michigan Rep. John Conyers (news, bio, voting record), the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has called for the creation of committee to recommend grounds for possible impeachment of Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney.

But Pelosi said such a decision rests with her and the Democratic caucus.

"John Conyers is an enthusiastic advocate. I am the leader. Our caucus will decide where we go," she said.

I wonder how long after President Bush is out of office they will continue to try and impeach him? HA!

A university professor here in my hometown (who penned a political book) whined in 1996 that Reagan should have been impeached.

"John Conyers is a hard core Marxist."

John Conyers couldn't define Marxism..
As a typical leftist - he simply complains, accuses and blames....
Conyers hasn't had an original idea in decades.

Somebody should be investigating Pelosi's employment of illegal aliens.

intrestingly the GOP didnt begin its rise to majority status until after they purged the Birchers from the party in the 1960s.

William Buckely was front and center on tossing the Bircher garbage out.

Actualyl the DEMS have their own extremist problem, much worse than anything the GOP has with a few ankle biters.

Anybody believe the Democrats when they say this? Impeachment is on the way if they win in November.

"But Pelosi denied Republican claims that her party would move quickly to impeach Bush"

Two reactions: Pelosi is entirely ignoring her party's rhetoric over the past several months.

Why would she do that? Because she is afraid it will galvanize Republican turnout AND because polls somewhere must indicate that the majority of people DON'T want an impeachment hearing.

As usual, Dems have to lie about their intent in order to be elected

The dims committing political suicide by doing so.

What concerns me more than the dimRats are the fair weather conservatives, many of whom I have read here in FR! who vow to 'teach' the pubbies a lesson by not voting for them!

That will be the ultimate shoot-in-the-foot act.

Good grief, folks, if we don't hang on to the house and senate - get ready for socialism, capitulation to the terrorists, gun control, anarchy like you and I have never seen - nor, trust me, do you want to.

We will be handed over to the rule of the UN and it's all over. No getting freedom back - ANY one of you who does not hang tough, even though every jot and tittle of what you , personally, wanted done, didn't get done - you are as bad as any traitorous, ignorant dimSocialist -

Together we stand, or we fall apart. m.t."

You think the dimRats have been super successful at taking down pubblies thru' false charges, innuendo etc? You ain't seen nothing yet compared to what they have in their game plan if they get control.

For starters, they have vowed, since before Bush was Pres., to take down the next republican pres. anyway they can simply as PAYBACK. Anyone who helps them win by NOT voting for pubbies - is no better then they are.

I'm beginning to believe the Dem's might well get their chance to impeach Bush considering the way conservatives are turning on him here.

Yep - and I was not as 'polite' in saying so in my post # 71

And who says the libs are taking over the house, senate and wh???? Hillary????? ROFLMAO

She doesn't have to - if the number of conservatives in the general public that will not vote for pubbies to "show them!" because their every jot and tittle that they wanted wasn't done by Bush et al - is on the same percentage as here in FR - of all places! - then, yeah, they'll be in control - and I'll be heading for the hills

I've said it before and I'll say it again: even IF the "Republican" party loses the House in November they are still looking good to regain it in '08. ?

I wouldn't want to take that chance - do you have any idea how much damage they can do in two years? They will run so many of our reps out of their careers, we will NEVER be in control again. Remember, their tactics don't rely on truth - just innuendo and smear -

Because if they ever DO get the power back, the first thing they are going to dismantle is the Electoral College.

exactly - and that would disenfranchise the red states.

>Wake up folks -

That is an issue we need to get out front and center now - wake up the red staters that if they don't vote republican NOW - their votes will be worthless in future elections. The Blue states - big lib cities - will rule our every breath

I know your right. But my gut feelings about this current administration and the Senate Repubs is not even disappointment, it's cynicism and dismay.

I'm not even that big of a borders guy....but what happened to even the smaller issues?...tax reform, tort reform, vouchers?

What are these guys doing? Just gathering paychecks? In any other job they'd be fired tomorrow morning for non-performance.

The only things that keeps them there is how bad the dims are. It really is an awful situation....and I'm a happy kinda guy.

Won't impeach carries about as much weight as "won't raise taxes". You just know they won't be able to help themselves.
