Prince Charles opens Bedouin tent at London peace center (possible islamic convert alert)

LONDON - Prince Charles on Thursday officially opened London's most unlikely new landmark - a large Bedouin tent that will be used to promote peace and reconciliation.

Created of out goat hair, the structure stands in the garden of the former St. Ethelburga's Church which was destroyed by an Irish Republican Army bomb in 1993.

The church reopened as a center for peace and reconcilication in 2002 and the tent - built in Saudi Arabia and designed to withstand London's regular rain showers - will be used for events promoting interfaith dialogue.

Addressing leaders from nine faiths, Charles on Thursday argued for greater understanding between the faiths.

"We are all trying to explain the nature of mystery and in a sense it is almost impossible to explain, he said.

"If only we could understand each other's groupings to understand the mystery, not try to overdo the way in which we decide that we know everything, we might perhaps reduce the level of conflict and violence and misunderstanding."

The opening received messages of support from international figures including the Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and rock star Bono.

Academic Keith Critchlow designed the tent according to the tenets of geometry, algebra and astrology rather than on traditional religious lines.

It is carpeted with rugs woven in conflict zones.

A tent was chosen because it is associated with the nomadic origins of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

St. Ethelburga's attracts up to 5,000 visitors a year from conflict areas as far apart as Northern Ireland and Tibet.

Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Zoroastrians, Sikhs and members of the Baha'i faith were represented at Thursday's ceremony.

In his message, Clinton praised the center.

"As the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 in my country and the devastating attack on the church at this site so painfully demonstrated, there are still those who place their difference above our common humanity, who prefer to demonise people who are unlike them rather than learn from one another," he said.

But he seemed taken aback when Zaki Badawi, principal of the Muslim College, described him as "the most popular world leader in the Muslim community throughout the world".

They aren't calling him 'Sheikh Charles' yet, are they?

Any comments?

Nothing that doesn't involve a lot of expletives, I'm afraid.

A lot of Pals living in what is now Israel also weren't forcibly removed from their land and did not lose any property when Israel became a state. They and their descendants live in Israel to this day. How big are the Jewish communities in predominantly Muslim countries these days? What happened to all the property and money that they lost when they had to flee persecution in the early 1950's? I guess in the Arab mind, Iraqi, Iranian, Egyptian, etc. Jews deserved what they got.

As for His Royal Chuckness, he may be the heir, but I think he will be an uninspiring sovereign for the UK. The Brits already look past him to his sons.

Then please explain this radical appeasement streak he has expressed. Pandering to islam is not the sign of inteligence I would expect from your anecdote.

Here's another weird note...

Prince Charles has agreed to allow a four-metre high bronze statue to be erected in the middle of Brazil's Amazon rainforest depicting him as "saviour" of the world in a loincloth with arms outstretched and suspended by giant wings.

The statue is a tribute from the people of Tocantins State, the remote Amazon region. It was the region's affinity with Prince Charles' eco-friendly campaigning that inspired local sculptor Mauricio Bentes.

The statue showed him hovering over a sea of humanity, casting a benign look downwards with his arms in open embrace.

"It is Prince Charles saving the world," said Tocantins' governor, Jose Wilson Sequeira Campos, who sprang the gift on Prince Charles as he toured a research station in the middle of the rainforest swamp.

The prince said he was "amazed" and "deeply touched".

A tent was chosen because it is associated with the nomadic origins of ... Islam.

Nah, the British have had a fascination for all things Bedouin for years. Has nothing to do with religion, it's the romanticism of the life of the nomad.

I know that the late Canadian Prime Minister,Pierre Elliot Trudeau was invited to a Bedouin tent. The sycophantic Canadian media repeated but few replays of the occasion.

Trudeau donned a caftan or some sort of Arabic garb. He tiddled and fiddled around in some sort of Arabic dance. A grin on his map.

Wot a carry on!

As for Charles- ah, sigh, shaking of the head. Is there no end to this APPEASEMENT?. May God curse the perpetrators of the terrorist bombing, that destroyed that church. Charles is not going to hide that horror.

I don't believe he needs to convert. I believe he has established a pattern of behavior to exclude him from the throne.

Look to one of the son's to be the next King (and it may not be the oldest!)

"How would that work, the Supreme Governor of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith, a convert to islam?"

Uh, it wouldn't.

"Defender of the Faith," in case the poor cypher doesn't understant it, does NOT mean islam!

Not big into royality, but I have always admired the Queen. She served in WWII when she didn't have to serve.

If you ask most Brits whether they want to see Charles as King, they'd probably say they'll wait for a "Bedouin"...
