Google sued as source of porn
Newsday ^ | 5/5/6 | Richard J. Dalton Jr.

A Nassau County legislator filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming Google Inc. generates "billions of dollars from the pornography trade and illicit profiteers."

The lawsuit by four-term legislator Jeffrey Toback (D-Oceanside) calls the Internet search engine the world's largest distributor of child pornography, claiming that child porn is part of the company's business model. Google "continues to put its economic gains ahead of the interests and well-being of America's children," the lawsuit, filed in Nassau State Supreme Court alleges.

Google spokesman Steve Langdon said in a statement: "Child pornography is illegal, and Google prohibits it in our products. When we find or are made aware of any child pornography, we remove it from our products, including our search engine. We also report it to the appropriate law enforcement officials and fully cooperate with the law enforcement community to combat child pornography.

"In addition, Google offers a service called SafeSearch for our search engine that works to filter out adult content."

Though Google provides a filter called SafeSearch, it doesn't eliminate all adult material, and nothing prevents children from turning it off.

Toback, self-described as "not the most computer-literate guy," said he learned of the filter three days ago. He said he didn't know if the computers in his home have commercial filtering software that blocks pornography and other material unsuitable for children.

The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of damages and aims to stop the company's alleged promotion of child pornography; to post warnings that searches for child pornography are monitored and reported to law enforcement; and to offer filters to restrict access to the illicit material.

"What goes on in the house is the parents' responsibility," he said. But he added that Google "has a responsibility to make sure that these sites are not so easily accessible."

That's why I don't use google. If I do I end up with massive x rated e-mails. I hate it.

Strikes me as rather like suing the phone company for providing prostitutes.

That isn't even possible...unless you click on links and enter your e-mail address. You get porn e-mails when you sign up for things like Gary North newsletters and NewsMax alerts, not from Google searches.

When did you give Google your email address? Like Toback, you must not be the most computer-literate guy if simply going to a search engine website (or any other website) results in an increase in email.

There's a hypertext link indicating whether SafeSearch is on or off immediately under the search box. I will say, however, that this only appears on the results page, not the main Google page.

I have been using Google since it started. I have seen porn come up on searches, but I have NEVER seen any kiddie porn come up. Not even once.

This is a bogus claim.

So one should sue a Librarian because you don't like the contents of the Library or what the Authors put in the books.

Bingo! Porn e-mails come when you provide your email address to sites that sell your information. Don't sign up for crummy sites and you'll get less spam. I've never signed for NewSmax or Gary North's stuff, so I can't speak to them specifically. They may well be selling email addresses to some sites, which then sell them to others. Every time you post your email on a site, you're likely to be on new spam lists, including porn.

Dittos here. I have been on the Internet since 1990, and I have never seen kiddie porn from a search engine. Not Google, not AltaVista, not Yahoo, not any of them.

I'd simply throw a BS flag on that play.

I would not give him the satisfaction. IMHO, posting as frequently as he does but never responding is a hall mark of a disrupter at worst and a time waster and rudeness at the least.

It is possible for a website to capture your email address but you have to actually visit it in order for this to happan.

I use Google all the time and have no such problems. However, two things I've noticed. First, I have a gmail account that I have never used. Ever. I've never sent an email with it, given it to anyone, or posted it on a web site, and it gets dozens of spam emails every day. Second, I keep an MSN throw-down account for registering with web sites, etc., and every time I bid on anything on eBay, the spam spikes on that account. I also have a .mac email address and an email address attached to my own domain. Neither of them get any spam at all.

However, you'll be sorry you didn't answer those emails as you think of me making big money from my refinanced home by helping a Nigerian prince move his money to US accounts, all while sporting a bigger penis.

A spam auto-bot must have guess your username. I use my gmail account as my primary email, and average about 1 spam message a week. Of course, I only give that address to people I trust and trustworthy companies with good privacy policies.

Not without your knowledge. About the only thing they could do was trigger an email form but you'd get a warning"Do you wish to submit this form" and you could spike it at that point.

You can further distance yourself from any such potential security holes by not using Internet Exploder.
