Politics wasn't first on list of NY Sen. Clinton's career picks

May 1, 2006

PURCHASE, N.Y. (AP) _ She's a former first lady, but to hear Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton tell it, all of that pales in comparison to her real childhood dreams.

"I wanted desperately to be an Olympic athlete," Clinton said Monday at a Purchase College symposium on Title IX, the 1972 law outlawing sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funding. "I tried everything. I ran every race, and if I was really lucky I finished second to last...I couldn't jump, I couldn't run, I couldn't swim."

After determining she'd never be an athlete, she set her sights on becoming an astronaut.

"So I wrote to NASA and said, 'How do I sign up to be an astronaut?"' she said. "And they wrote back very politely and said, 'We don't take girls."'

Next went the dream of a career in medicine.

"I volunteered at the hospital but kept getting lightheaded and woozy when I saw anyone in any kind of distress," she said.

She also abandoned hopes of becoming a scientist or mathematician because she didn't have the best grades in those subjects.

That, she said, left her current career choice _ one that was shaped at the family dinner table.

"We had the most lively, contentious dinner table conversations that probably anybody has endured," Clinton recalled of her family's mealtime public policy debates. "I thought well, I do like to study what goes on in the world around me, I adore government as a subject in school, I'm very interested in politics and history. So I went to law school."

Despite all those apparent setbacks, Clinton urged students in the audience to pursue their dreams by believing in themselves and ignoring obstacles in their path.

Ms. Clinton can't decide if she wrote NASA when she was twelve when it first opened or when she was fourteen after being inspired by an astronaut or if it was later when she was a baby sitter. She has told three different versions of this story.

what about the "i wanted to be a marine but i was told i was a woman" story?

she probably couldn't overcome the shock after learning that.

One can only hope she soon fulfills her dreams of being a gymnast.

If that woman is elected President of the United States, I'm not leaving the country, I'm leaving the planet.

"...I'm very interested in politics and history. So I went to law school."

"You know, in those days, there were no schools that let you major in History or Political Science. George W. Bush majored in History at Yale at the same time I was there but that major wasn't open to women"

"Turned out, the only way I could get into politics was to marry as serial womanizer but that's a whole 'nother story".

After failing at all else - giving up on all her failed dreams - she buys and lies her way into becoming a two-bit senator from NY....what a success story - a real shinining example for the 'yutes' of America. Hate her, and always will.

Hillary seems to have forgotten to tell the students about her ardent wish to enlist in the Army, but she was supposedly denied by recruiters because she was so old. So many wishes...or is it so many lies?

only way I could get into politics was to marry as serial womanizer

The only reason Bill Clinto was a "serial womanizer" was the fact that he never could perfect the art of becoming a "parallel womanizer".

He's probably still striving toward that goal.

That woman cannot tell the truth. She couldn't even recognize it.

1. she was named after a mountain climber (hillary) :So when I was born, she called me Hillary and she always told me, 'It's because of Sir Edmund Hillary,'" Hillary Clinton reported (even though hillary was already 6 when hillary climbed the mountain. (from snopes.com)

2. hillary wanted to join the marines but was turned down because she was a woman.

3. she was turned down for the olympics.

4. she wanted to be in nasa but, gasp, she was a woman

5. she's alway loved the yankees, even while living in illinois.

6. she was shocked, shocked by her husband's infidelities, especially monica. never saw it coming, as it were.

Well, she would have given a greater meaning to a BAM (Broad A** Marine).

BTW: If the Marines didn't want her, it wasn't because of her gender.

I thought Hillary helped God design the human body. You would have thought she could have a least convinced him to give her an athletic body.

You'd think there would be at least one person in her past that would remember her talking about these burning ambitions!

Arkanside. It's the effect of being inconvenient to the billyblytheclinton's.

"I volunteered at the hospital but kept getting lightheaded and woozy when I saw anyone in any kind of distress," she said.

So much for "I feel your pain."
