Mike DeWine, of Cedarville, comes to his third Senate campaign with a solid reputation for integrity and a track record of independence in a Republican-dominated Congress. Though consistent in declaring his support for most Bush administration policies, he has held his ground when his position differs from that of the most-conservative wing of his party. His brand of civility and professionalism, not partisanship, yields results.
And the endorsement is such, total, rubbish. How "civil and professional" was it to trash Rumsfeld in a Salon Interview? And what "results" are we supposed to be impressed with?
What's the point of having a Republican senator if he almost never votes, acts, or speaks like a Republican?
Mike DeWine can only be seen as "conservative" on prolife issues, is a Johnny-come-lately on defending traditional marriage, and is either clearly not conservative or deafeningly silent on every other issue important to conservatives -- now even on the War on Terror!
Vote Bill Pierce on May 2 if you're in Ohio, and spread the word -- there's a legitimate conservative alternative who will support drilling in ANWR, defend our borders, etc., but most importantly, won't just let things happen without speaking up, as Ohio's senior incumbent senator has.
The grass-roots does not like Mike DeWine, and I mean REALLY doesn't like him. Bill Pierce has defeated Mike DeWine in three of five ballot-based GOP County endorsement processes, and has tied him once; that isn't supposed to happen to a two-term incumbent, BUT IT HAS.
The grass roots is responding to Bill Pierce who is a genuine and articulate conservative and will be the citizen legislator our Founders envisioned, in the mold of a Coburn or DeMint.
Bill Pierce needs our support. (Web Site; Pierce Blog; contribute)
More on Pierce's background and positions is at this previous FR post: HERE
Mike DeWine has only two allies: Apathy, and Inertia. Bill Pierce can crush both of them on May 2 if we support him now, and if Ohio conservatives turn out and vote their beliefs. Pierce for Senate.

If you are surprised by this selection, there isn't much I can do for you.......
I'm honestly amazed they even made a selection in this case.
Thats code for HE'S A DEMOCRAP!!!!!
I know this is going to come across as shallow, but somebody needs to do something about Pierce's photograph. He looks a little too robotic. The smile doesn't look genuine.
He need to get the full smile out there or the the tough, solid, and firm stare. Either one. But not his present look, which is inbetween the two.
I hope he succeeds. He sounds better than DeWine.
I'm only surprised in the sense that none of the other big OH papers bothered to endorse anyone in this race, and expected them not to.
Of course, I would expect the Dispatch to endorse him if they bother. The point is that their endorsement is a good reason to vote for Pierce, and to make sure to get out and vote for Pierce, because they rarely endorse any kind of true conservative.
You can already see the roadmap to the Dispatch endorsing Brown in the fall, with the reference to the "most-conservative" wing of the party (Dispatch code for "extremists"). As soon as DeWine casts one vote agreeing with true conservatives, he'll be labeled an extremist, and they'll move to Brown.
Don't give them the satisfaction -- Vote Pierce, who would toast Sherrod Brown in the fall with a conservative turnout that would blow everyone away.
I'm not sure if I'll trade my Arlen Sphincter for your DeWhiney. Which is worse?
Oh there's a lot of cosmetic things I'd change, but not the candidate.
He's one in a million, and I'm not normally a big person on praise.
I doubt it.
While Pierce can be considered the Conservative of the race, it's very rare for the Dispatch to endorse a bomb-throwing leftist like Brown.
They'll endorse DeWhine if he wins the primary. Just watch.
They WON'T endorse Blackwell but they'd probably endorse Petro if he won.
Your Specter.
I'd take DeWhiner, simply because I feel his support for the judges is better.
But I'm still not voting for DeWhine either way.
Hope you're right, but hope we don't have to find out.
I'm voting for Pierce, but I'm not expecting anything other than a DeWine win.
I'm still of the opinion the only person who could be reasonably expected to unseat DeWhine would be JOhn Kasich.
Yeah, and when I say robotic, I guess that I should remember his comparison is Mike DeWine: not exactly Mr. Excitement.
My comment was more a general comment on the Pierce campaign. They could very easily spruce things along and help him out a bit.
No big deal this late. Wish I were an Ohioan and could vote. Pierce would have my vote.
I'm voting for Pierce too. I've had enough of Dewine. He seems to be unable to make up his mind on WHAT he is. He's not a real conservative,IMHO. We need to get the RINO'S OUT!
Me too...
but considering the amount of ads I've seen for Pierce (which is exactly ZERO in my area), I don't realistically expect much.
I have a real fear that the Ohio Republicans are so sick of our incompetent RINO representation including Taft, DeWine and Voinovich, not to mention the ugly gubernatorial primary TV advertising that they will just stay home and not vote.
Bill is doing things under the radar like targeted e-mail campaigns and the like that are getting good response. He also has nearly universal support of Ohio's blogs. He has also visited the central committees in over 80 of Ohio's 88 counties, and as noted above has kicked Dewine's butt in ballot-based county endorsement meetings.
IF, IF, he pulls the upset, it could change the calculus of campaigning radically.
That's fine, as long as it's DeWine supporters who stay home (assuming you're referring to Tuesday). :-->
If you're referring to Nov. that is a huge potential problem. If you read the Ohio board here, there are a lot of people who say they'll sit out the Senate vote if DeWine wins. I don't agree (gritting teeth), but I sympathize.
Thanks, folks. You're also part of the under the radar strategy. (clever how you got roped in, eh? :-->)
So spread the word, vote for Pierce.
