Rush Limbaugh's attorney has issued a statement announcing a settlement of the Florida prosecutor's investigation into alleged doctor shopping by Rush Limbaugh.

Details have been read by Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. Basically, the charge of doctor shopping is dismissed, with some conditions.

In response to media and other inquiries, Roy Black, Rush Limbaugh's attorney, released the following statement today concerning a settlement agreement with the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office to end the investigation of Mr. Limbaugh:

"I am pleased to announce that the State Attorney's Office and Mr. Limbaugh have reached an agreement whereby a single count charge of doctor shopping filed today by the State Attorney will be dismissed in 18 months. As a primary condition of the dismissal, Mr. Limbaugh must continue to seek treatment from the doctor he has seen for the past two and one half years. This is the same doctor under whose care Mr. Limbaugh has remained free of his addiction without relapse.

"Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the start that there was no doctor shopping, and we continue to hold this position. Accordingly, we filed today with the Court a plea of 'Not Guilty' to the charge filed by the State.

"As part of this agreement, Mr. Limbaugh also has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the State of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation. The agreement also provides that he must refrain from violating the law during this 18 months, must pay $30 per month for the cost of "supervision" and comply with other similar provisions of the agreement.

"Mr. Limbaugh had intended to remain in treatment. Thus, we believe the outcome for him personally will be much as if he had fought the charge and won."

The actions taken today are as follows:

-- The State Attorney has filed a single charge of doctor shopping with the Court. The charge is being held in abeyance under the terms of an agreement between the State and Mr. Limbaugh.

-- Mr. Limbaugh has filed a plea of "Not Guilty" with the Court.

The formal agreement between Mr. Limbaugh and the State Attorney will be filed with the Court on Monday. The terms of the agreement are substantively as follows:

-- Mr. Limbaugh will continue in treatment with the doctor he has seen for the past two and one half years.

-- After Mr. Limbaugh completes an additional 18 months of treatment, the State Attorney has agreed to drop the charge.

-- Mr. Limbaugh has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the State of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation.

How is this any different than being stopped for speeding, paying a fine, and attending traffic school? Sour grapes from lefty lawyers.

I liked the way Greta kept asking "So you have a problem with the prosecutor?" The idea that this persecutor would willingly give Rush any kind of break just because he is white and rich . . .

I did the math. Rush has to pay a $30,000 fine. Given his tax bracket, I figure it's going to take 1 hour and 48 minutes on the air to bring in that amount.

I worked as an administrator in an anesthesia clinic for patients with chronic pain, for over 10 years. I can't tell you how many times we had patients who we suspected were 'doctor shopping'.

Quite honestly I will say that I think they were doing the right thing because so many physicians have NO IDEA how to treat chronic pain. Either that or they are just skittish about prescribing anything stronger than an 800mg Ibuprofen.

It's really sad because some of the people ended up having cancer, that was never diagnosed until the very end stage. They went through hellish pain because the doctors were inept or skittish.

I truly feel for anyone with this type of problem. Doctors are in no way as infallible as some people think.

About the same as those Liberal Hollywood types who take some sort of "treatment" for their drug crimes and then get off.

Normally a not guilty plea ends in a trial end of story but I suspect the not guilty part was part of the deal...

I seriously doubt that the ability for a defendant to plead "not guilty" is something that can be bartered away. No agency on earth can take away my ability to plead "not guilty" to any criminal charge as long as I am deemed "sane".

Most physicians today are scared to death to prescribe any kind of pain medication for being branded as a drug dealer or slapped with a malpractice suit.

I've seen doctors prescribe pain medication to a patient in need and then purposely refers him/her to another physican so that he can start writing the scrip. This goes around the horn so by the time you're "referred to a specialist", you do have a list of doctors a mile long.

Most people who need pain medication, quite frankly, do become "addicted". That's the nature of the medication and the only way to relieve the pain. If you have never had serious chronic pain you really can't form an opinion, IMHO.

(i'm keeping track)

I asked Thatcher to pass along a message of support and appreciation for Rush. I admire Rush, support him completely, and, at times, rely on him. Others may not want to make it known.

For whatever reason, this thread has become something of a snipe fest, and I did not want to be part of it. As another FReeper so eloquently put in an earlier post, FR is a group of intelligent conservatives knocking the snotbubbles out of each other over trivial issues.

I want to keep my snotbubbles for something bigger.

he didn't barter it AWAY he bartered it IN - that's different I think.

He didn't barter that in. He cannot be challenged on pleading innocence. It was his to lose. You can claim guilt even if you are innocent if you like.

Rte,

I haven't seen where God or a HP is discussed during detox, which your example implies. As you know, if, in early recovery, an addicted person rejects God then a HP is suggested.

I've heard uninitiated people scoff at the program by guffawing something like, "Oh yeah, they believe in a pencil or a lightbulb."

Technically, it is even different than not guilty. In the eyes of the law, it is neither guilty nor not guilty.....

It is better.

In 18 months, if all is well and the terms of the settlement have been met, CASE DISMISSED.
