Prominent, respectable Evangelical Christians have told me, not for quotation, that millions of their co-religionists cannot and will not vote for Romney for president solely because he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If Romney is nominated and their abstention results in the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's just too bad. The evangelicals are adamant, saying there is no way Romney can win them over.

I am neither a guy nor an atheist. I merely posed the question.
Romney's Mormonism does not rule him out for me.
But it is perfectly legitimate to consider a person's religion when evaluating his character, values, and way of thinking.

Hint: if you don't want your "knowledge" disturbed, don't take advantage of the histories in books, information on the Internet, etc, - There's been a lot of "making up" and killing and burying and denigrating, and denying and rewriting etc for 2000 years.

As a secular right winger I will vote for him above McCain and Rudy in the primanys, and for sure in the general.

While that statement is true of the average Mormon, the LDS Church position on abortion is pretty weak. It leaves the decision of whether to have an abortion or not to the counsel of the LDS bishop.

There are issues with applying generalities - even true ones - to an individual. You can't really learn much about Romney by applying generalities - good or bad - about Mormons. But what you can do is look at Romney as an individual and in the context of why he chooses to be a Mormon and how and why he carries out it's practices.

Having turned away dozens of Mormon missionaries from my door over the years, I feel I have some expertise in the matter. At least as much as the next guy who turned dozens of Mormon boys away from his door.
There would be reasons for me not to vote for him, but religious persuasion would not be one of them.

I actually am LDS and am unsure about Romney. His stance on many things seems too liberal for me.
Romneys most significant weakness in national electoral scene is that his "power base" is in the NorthEast, a region which almost assuredly will vote for ANY Democrat in the 2008 race.
His pitch appears to be that he's a "problem-solver thru innovative thinking." That pitch didn't work for Lamar Alexander and to a lesser extent Jack Kemp. I think this approach to the electorate in Republican Primaries has flaws.
As an aside, the claim that the LDS belief system is "the same as other Protestant Christian sects" is disagreed with by both Mormons and most Protestant Christian sects.
One of Joseph Smith's early statements on the founding of the church was that an Angel told him the current Christian sects were _WRONG_. So Mormons should surely disagree that they are the "same."
We have the same problem with some people in Arizona. Which is why we ended up with a Clinton clone as our governor.
Couldn't care what his religion is. He's a RINO. That is why I wouldn't vote for him. Not even if Hillary was running on the other ticket. I'd vote either Constitution or Libertarian.
Absolutely. For example, if a candidate based his beliefs on Catholicism we'd already be in agreement or only modest but amicable disagreement on a vast array of things, being co-religionists. But a "Catholic" like Kerry or Kennedy puts aside his nominal religion, for whatever reason, to embrace liberalism (as Romney has done). So their religion's values don't come through, and I would never vote for them.

there are "soft spoken" Christians
who do NOT love their enemies; and
there are those Christians who
proclaim, "If you tolerate another
religion, you are negligent of your own!"
All that said, re Mr. Romney...most
people A Born-Again Christian, Pres. Bush sees
good in any religion that points the way
toward the One God. Not all Muslims
follow the nth word of the Qu'ran;
neither do all Christians follow Bible
teachings, nor all Jews follow the letter
of the Torah.
Admittedly, most Born-Again Christians tend
to be a bit boisterous in their "new clothes."
And those of us who hear them proclaim, "I've
found Jesus!" mumble under our breath at the
proclamation...since WE NEVER LOST HIM. NTL,
we can all be assured the Heavens rejoice as
the lost sheep and Prodigals are brought back
