Religion may hinder Romney in '08
Chicago Sun Times ^

Posted on 04/28/2006 1:47:54 PM PDT by SDGOP

Prominent, respectable Evangelical Christians have told me, not for quotation, that millions of their co-religionists cannot and will not vote for Romney for president solely because he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If Romney is nominated and their abstention results in the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's just too bad. The evangelicals are adamant, saying there is no way Romney can win them over.

I can't forsee the GOP nominating an atheist no matter his views on the hot issues. That was my point is raising the question.

And it was an excellent question.

Sadly, I agree with your premise.

Are we harking back to the days of anti-Kennedy?

Did JFK believe he could someday be god over a universe of his own creation?

BTW...I didn't want to give the impression I think all non-Mormon/Catholic Christians are religious bigots, because they aren't, in my experience. I was just making personal observation that there are people who have views about religion that don't leave much choice about where things stand, just as there are those same types regarding race, gender, etc.

And these are the same folks who voted for "W" because he's a Christian ... while "W" sucks up to Muslims saying "Islam a "noble" "religion" of "peace"". I'm a Christian, and I believe Mormon theology is flawed, but I'll take Mormon theology over pandering to Islam any day.

I used to think I'd have no problem voting for a devout Mormon. Then I talked to my Pastor who was raised in the Mormon church. I just asked him why is he not a Mormon anymore. 4 hours later when he was done telling me all he went through as a Mormon....I'd have a hard time voting for Romney.

If you add pro-marriage, and pro-freedom of religious expression in the public square, I'D vote for you, MineralMan.

You're a good guy. :)

I wish you would have corrected my spelling: foresee, NOT forsee. I hurry all too often.

So you're saying you don't want my vote. That's OK. No way I'm going to vote for either of the big government parties again anyway.

Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world
Red, brown, yellow, black and white,
They are precious in his sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

The problem you have with the President, handman, is that he really IS a Christian, and unlike many on this forum, he ACTS like one.

Important to note that Islam was in Afghanistan for thousands of years. The Taliban were the first Muslims that thought it necessary to destroy the Buddha statues.

The Wahabi heresy is an abhomination. It throws out all the doctrines added over the last 1000 years that permitted a semi functioning society.

Probably not, but I'll bet he believed that a long time ago, an old man built a huge boat and put two of every species in it, and then the entire world was covered with water.

Maybe Republicans should consider finding new friends. If this is representative of the evangelical constituency (and I don't really think it is), these guys have a problem.

I admit to not knowing much about the LDS.

Well, let' see. One of the biggest reasons the evangelicals won't vote for a Mormon is because "they don't' believe in Christ!" (The fact that the actual name of the church is The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints doesn't phase their pronouncements. (and "Saints" is what the original followers of Jesus called each other 2000 years ago)

and "They don't believe in the Bible!" (They not only believe in the Bible, they study it from verse one in Genesis to the end of Revelations. the Book of Mormon is not their "Bible", It is a compilation of the dealings of the Lord in the Americas. When the Bible books were composed, no one knew that the Americas existed. No one, that is except the Creator, God. After all, the people in these lands were his people also. Would He have left them abandoned?

The evangelicals seem to spend as much denigrating other religions as honoring their own. Seems judgmental to me. What's that commandment about judging>

Mormons aren't secretive. I;ve always felt the best way to learn about something is from the horses mouth. You might want to look at their sites -

http://www.mormon.org/

and http://www.lds.org/

their most well known college, BYU, also has a TV channel from which you can learn a lot about their beliefs and people and they offer free Bibles and Book of Mormons and movies.

Now - all that said: I will never vote for Mick Romney.

I do not know what happened or who got to him or if he is just blind, but that totally socialistic, and totally 'Massachusetts' bill he is proposing for health insurance is a behemoth - and when Hitlery and sKerry jumped on board enthusiastically, that was the litmus test!

He jumped the shark. He's off the radar with me..,
