Prominent, respectable Evangelical Christians have told me, not for quotation, that millions of their co-religionists cannot and will not vote for Romney for president solely because he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If Romney is nominated and their abstention results in the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's just too bad. The evangelicals are adamant, saying there is no way Romney can win them over.

Ignorance and fear can still rule the day.
I would just HATE to put in that position, but I would definitely hold my nose and vote for him. It doesn't anything to do with his Mormon views (although I am an evangelical Christian and do find fault with what he believes), but more to do with what his political views are.
Are you equating Scientology with Mormons?
You rang?
The man is right on social issues, period. Romney's no fringe polygamy-advocating Mormon.
LOL --- sorry, MineralMan beat you to the nomination,.. maybe you will accept VP?
Romney himself points out that Mormons are just like any other Christian.
Christians believe that Marriage is between one Man and one Woman.
Mormons believe that Marriage is between one Man and one Woman,......
and another woman...
and another woman...
and another woman...
To my mind, all religions are initially based on personality. You have a question, you go see the Prophet, and he dispenses wisdom. After the Prophet is no longer available (through death, translation, or miraculous removal) the remaining followers develop a theology to fill in the gaps in the Prophet's teachings. If there is an excess of piety, the followers add a little common sense to permit self defense. If there is an excess of violence, the followers add some piety and kindness. If there is excess fornication, the followers develop a few exceptions. Some have even made the Gospels a gift of some grammar.
My view on evangelical Christians is that although I don't expect them to leave their faith at the door before they venture into the voting booth, I'd like to remind them that their Bible shows that their Savior was perfectly capable of spreading his Gospel when the government of Palestine was run by morbid Pagans who practiced witchcraft, blood sacrifice, and threw Christians to the lions for sport. Despite all of that, Christianity flourished.
By comparison, do the Mormons *really* sound so bad to Evangelicals that they couldn't vote for one to defend the US Constitution?
If it's *really* come to that, then I do believe that it's come time that Evangelical Christians need to find unclaimed territory somewhere outside of international law and start their own society devoid of contact with the outside world.
I've actually known quite a few of these. They are not remotely as uncommon as some people might think.
Truer words never spoken.
Of course, that's your opinion. Others would disagree with his social positions. I don't know enough about him to voice my opinion, except to seriously state that his religion is NOT an issue to me.
I have never met a Mormon I didn't like, and I have never met a Mormon who wasn't fully against polygamy.
I don't have a problem voting for him either if it comes down to him versus her thighness. THere are plenty of reasons not to vote for romney, religion is probably at the bottom of the list.
Does Novak really believe it is "unconstitutional" for voters to factor in a candidate's religion in making a choice?
That said, Romney's abortion wafflings will cost him more evangelical votes than his Mormonism.
I agree.
I have had the opportunity to listen to Romney at length because I live in Massachusetts. I don't agree with all of his stands on issues, but then, I don't agree with President Bush on all of HIS stands on issues.
That said, I like the man. He is pretty straightforward and honest(more so than most politicians) in my opinion.
He will be savaged by some people because of his religion, that is the way it is. Heck, I am a Catholic, and some of the things I have heard "Christians" say about Catholics in my presence (They didn't know I was a Catholic) was, umm...pretty revealing. And not very nice. So be it. Just the way some people feel when it comes to religion, that's their business.
... keep an eye out for flying pigs.
I can't forsee the GOP nominating an atheist no matter his views on the hot issues. That was my point is raising the question.
Well, its just a fact of life (regarding some people in our base).
"If Romney is nominated and their abstention results in the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's just too bad."
Foolish people.
Hey MM...somehow I was expecting you to chime in on this one :-)
