MSU Muslims seek discipline of professor for critical e-mail
Lansing State Journal ^ | 4/25/06 | Matthew Miller

Note referred to group as 'brutal'

The Muslim Students' Association at Michigan State University is calling for a public reprimand of a mechanical engineering professor who sent the group an e-mail calling them "dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems."

The e-mail, sent by professor Indrek Sven Wichman on Feb. 28 from his university account, was a sharply worded criticism of Muslim protests against the Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad and of Muslim cultures in general.

In it, according to a copy provided by the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Wichman told the group he hoped that they would "return to your ancestral homelands ... instead of troubling Americans."

Reached at his office Monday, Wichman declined to comment on the letter.

MSA President Farhan Abdul Azeez said Wichman's e-mail was unacceptable, particularly from a faculty member, "especially considering Michigan State's commitment to trying to be inclusive and welcoming and diverse."

MSU Vice President for University Relations Terry Denbow said that Wichman has been cautioned against "any future communication along these lines," but he was not formally disciplined.

Denbow said the views expressed in the e-mail are "highly inappropriate, antithetical to the institution's values and positions and policies and, to me personally, worthy of an apology."

But he said a university investigation found that Wichman's attitudes had not created a "threat to the integrity of the learning environment."

In a statement released late Monday, Satish Upda, acting dean of MSU's College of Engineering, emphasized that Wichman "does not speak for anyone but himself."

He added, however, that while he and others might find Wichman's ideas offensive, the college is committed "to maintaining a free and open marketplace of ideas. Part of that is allowing its community members to challenge each other's ideas and values."

Abdul Azeez said the MSA brought the e-mail to the attention of MSU administrators the day after it was sent and, along with representatives from CAIR, has since met with several of MSU's top administrators on the issue.

Both Abdul Azeez and Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR's Michigan Chapter, said they were making the e-mail public because the university had not provided a satisfactory response.

"They should send out an official statement to the public distancing themselves from these types of statements," Walid said, "and confirm for us that they did, in fact, do a formal investigation and that there is going to be some kind of disciplinary action against Dr. Wichman."

In a news release issued Monday, the MSA also called for MSU to establish a mandatory freshman seminar addressing "hate and discrimination," to set up diversity training programs for faculty and to provide support for Islamic culture and diversity programs, as well as programs addressing issues faced by Muslim students.

Denbow said university officials were "continuing to discuss those issues with them."

Academic freedom only extends to those wishing "a million Mogadishus" upon the US or exulting in the fate of "little Eichmanns"

Wichman is right and the rest are wrong.

Does MSU have an Arab President?

I don't know, but Michigan has a communist governor. Would you like to take her off our hands? BTW, she's handing out taxpayer-funded couscous stands to build "cool cities." Would you like one? She'll even throw in a fountain. You might need to wear a burka, though, while applying.

I'm holding out for Denunciations and Repudiations of Al Qaeda from the Saudi Imams during the next Hajj. But I appreciate the website. Funny, had Catholics been flying those planes, the Pope would have been apologizing profusely and leading prayer services for the victims. Unfortunately, the site you cite is Not the face of Islam today. When cartoonists, novelists and filmakers are killed or threatened with death, the words seem to ring false. I'll let you have the last word.

After 40+ years of terrorism almost exclusively by Is-Slime sub-human debris, a lame attempt at distancing themselves from the other 99% of Is-Slime does not impress me nor many others I suspect.

The leaders of this cockroach society make no attempt to hide the fact that they will not stop until we are all killed or converted.

If I had seen thousands of mudslimes in the streets protesting the USS Cole, 1st WTC bombing, Embassy bombings, on and on, maybe I would have been duped into thinking that Is-Slime is 90% moderate and 10% radical but 9/11 drew a line in history and now I KNOW FOR A FACT that 99% of Is-Slime is pure evil and maybe 1% are just too stupid to be allowed to live.

ONLY the laws of the USA are preventing me from returning fire. The retarded death cult Is-Slime has declared war on the world and they should not be surprised that we are Pi$$ed.

Ay-- the day not behaving like a complete maniac is the only qualification for being a productive member of society, you can stop the planet and let me off. As it is, there seems to be a race to the bottom in progress..

This is really rich coming from people who are willing to kill with impunity and without conscience those who do not believe as they do.

Really rich.

Un-freaking-believable.
