Ukrainian skinheads stab Jew

Thugs mark Hitler's birthday by attacking, stabbing Safed yeshiva students marking Passover in Ukraine

An emissary of the Union of Jewish Communities in Russia was the target of an attack by skinheads Saturday evening in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, Ynet has learned.

The man, Haim Gorbov, who studies at a Safed yeshiva, returned to Ukraine as part of a Seder organized by the Union of Jewish Communities in Russia and the former Soviet Union. After Gorbov's condition improved he was released from hospital.

It appears a gang of skinheads in the city sought to mark Hitler's birthday, April 20, by attacking a Jew. Dnepropetrovsk's Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kamintzky said that at first the skinheads tried to attack a group of yeshiva students in the city center, between the synagogue and the yeshiva in which they studied. They managed to escape, however, and the thugs then set upon the 20-year-old Gorbov.

Gorbov, who has Ukrainian citizenship, studied at the Or Avner school and after graduating arrived in Israel in order to study at a yeshiva in Safed. Rabbi Kamintzky said that at first the thugs struck him with a bottle on his head, but when they realized that the hat he was wearing was protecting him against serious injury they stabbed him in the chest and fled.

The President of the Union of Jewish Communities in Russia and the Soviet Union, Lev Laviev, called on the Ukrainian government not to be satisfied with another investigation into an attack on Jews after they take place.

"The rise in anti-Semitic activity demands immediate and determined preventative action. Whoever doesn't invest in fighting skinheads who are attacking minorities will have to deal with them when they increase the level of violence towards the whole of Ukrainian society," said Laviev.

Two months ago security guards thwarted a stabbing attack on the central synagogue in Kiev, Ukraine. The incident took place when a 65 year-old man arrived at the synagogue and asked to meet the rabbis. While speaking to the guards, the man pulled out a knife and said that all Jews should be killed.

The guards overpowered the attacker and handed him over to the police.

Meanwhile, Dnepropetrovsk's Chief of Police Alexander Beveilov, who is himself Jewish and who took part in the Passover Seder organized by the Jewish community in the city, promised Rabbi Kamintzky that police would hunt down the skinheads responsible for the attack.

Jewish Agency head Ze'ev Bielsky said that "we are at a situation 60 years after the Holocaust where Jews in Ukraine and Russia live under nonstop harassment.

So, your cousins' relatives, way back when, were all rich, made all of the Cossacks alcoholics, and lent money at exorbitant rates, did they?

At least you know that "THE PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF ZION" is garbage. That's a start.

By assimilate, do you mean become Christian? But that can't be, because you say that your Aunt is a Jewess.

Yes, many Russian Jews left; when they were able to. But after WWII, until quite recently, the USSR wouldn't allow many to do so.

Do you mean unethical? There isn't an English word "interethical".

There are good and bad in all nations, races, and religious groups' always have been.

She did. But my cousins assimilated. They turned to become russian. They after all were half-russian already.

Sorry it was my mistyping: I meant "inter-ethNical". I lost the letter "n":).

I think I will silence now.

Just one thing. It is NOT me who say things about Khmelnistskii "pogroms". It is their historians explained them that way.

I'm not quite certain that the fact that English is not your mother tongue, is the real problem here. But there is a problem.

Converting to Christianity doesn't make your cousins Russians. They were born there and I assume that many generations of their family were likewise born there. That and that ALONE, makes then Russians; NOT any religion.

In English the word "assimilation" means that the person takes on the culture and the language of the nation that person has emigrated to. It does not mean that they convert to some religion or other. Russian Jews and Russian Orthodox, alike, who immigrated to America, in the past, assimilated, but neither had to convert to Protestantism to do so.

I'm sorry to say that there is still something amiss with the word interethnical. I looked for it in two dictionaries and it doesn't exist.

The historians you are using as a source...LIED.

Good night............

Sit down "2":).

what's "2"?

You just said that jews were to be "pogromed" in Ukraine or anywhere where they lived beacuse they just live there. No matter else. You just said that jews was "hated by anyone" then to be "pogromed" by anyone.

There's nothing wrong with my argument. You said pogroms only happened in Ukraine, I said if Jews were allowed to live in Russia, they would have pogroms there too.

Pogroms were state organized- Ukrainian lands in the Austrian Empire (Galicia, Bukovyna, Transcarpathia) were peaceful. My town- Chernivtsi- is the perfect example.

So ukranians are not guilty of thier "pogroms' but it is Russia' imperial goverment which "compelled" ukranians to live together with jews.

All that is needed is to look at who the pogromshchiki were- it was not the general population. It was the conservative monarchist societies, Russian nationalist in character, like the Black Hundreds who were responsible.

I watched "Fiddler on the roof" not long ago (funny movie)- same story as what I'm saying.

And Cossacks of Khemnitskii pogromed jews BEFORE they even asked to join Russia.

So do NOT accuse Russa of your OWN wrongdoings!

I don't consider Khmelnytsky's actions as pogroms (which I define as conscious and planned implementations). In the Khmel. revolt, rich versus poor, Jews were on the wrong side of the war, they were allied with Poles and had died along with the Poles.

You repeated such massarce later in 1943 in Volyn. And in that case in was agaiunst poles and it was galitsians the perpetrators. DO not forget.

My family is not Jewish, however for the record my Uncle was fighting Hitler for the French Foreign Legion during WWII, because he just immigrated to France from Poland real close to the Ukrainian border. Anyway his unit was captured by the Germans and they were taken as POW's my Uncle because he was Russian/Ukrainian ended up in Auschwitz while his comrades ended up in a regular POW camp. My point is that there is more to the story that meets the eye. One thing that I would love to read up about is Polish-German relations before and after both World Wars.

Actually what you are saying is incorrect. The Communists disbanded the Cossacks shortly after they took over in 1917.

It was war and both sides committed atrocities. There are similar Ukrainian horror stories about the Polish acts (ex. Vyshnevetsky).

You repeated such massarce later in 1943 in Volyn. And in that case in was agaiunst poles and it was galitsians the perpetrators.

It amuses me very much when Russians mention the Volyn massacre. Why? because Russians don't care about what happens to Poles. This concern for the Poles is a fakery. The more dead Poles- the better. Isn't that a Russian motto? :) So, c'mon, let's be real.
You didn't ask for it, and I'm not giving you/Russians a permission ;) to talk about Volyn'.

WW2 is a very sensitive period in Ukrainian-Polish relations. Atrocities (followed by subsequent reprisals) were committed by both sides. After decades of stubborn pointing fingers at each other, there's finally some hope for mutual forgiveness.
