New York Is Losing People at Fastest Pace in America
New York Sun ^ | April 20, 2006 | DANIELA GERSON

New York State is losing more residents than any other state in the country, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics released early today.

Based on surveys taken between 2000 and 2004, the figures show that New York replaced California as the net migration outflow leader, with an average of 182,886 people leaving a year, nearly double California's average for the same period.

California led the nation between 1990 and 2000.

The findings track the state-to-state movement in America.

They do not include international immigration numbers.

The New York City metropolitan region - which includes Long Island and parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania - also leads the country in migration outflow, with an average of 211,014 leaving a year.

The number is higher than the state figure because many of those leaving the metropolitan region resettle in other areas of New York.

Despite the tremendous outflow, the overall city population, at 8.2 million, is growing due to increases in international immigration and a birthrate that is greater than the death rate.

"There are three reasons people are leaving: taxes, taxes, and taxes," a Republican candidate for governor, John Faso, said.

His recommended solution: "Cut taxes, reduce spending, put the state budget on a diet."

Another Republican candidate, William Weld, also stressed the need to cut taxes.

"For New York to retain its young people and talented work force, it must corral and bridle New York's government spending, cut taxes, and reduce imposed business costs such as health care and worker's compensation,"...

These are simple changes that will provide the key to keeping our seed corn: good jobs at good wages."

No one is moving to Boston, either.

Mass is number 2.

We escaped Austin a few years back to move to Flyover Country. We got really tired of the whole Tejas and Mexican flag business. My son would get really irritated and say, "Does anyone here know about Sam Houston or Davy Crockett or Jim Bowie?"

Crazy.

"They love to come to Florida because we have no state tax".

I thought they just came down here to tell us how everything we do is wrong!

The DUmmies do that everywhere.

Liberals leave high tax states like California and old Mexico for Arizona, Utah, Colorado and continue to vote liberal.

Or liberals leaving NY, Mass...for Florida, Texas...

They do not understand that voting for tax increases...means higher taxes.

To regard New York Republicans as any kind of solution to high taxes is a triumph of hope over experience. There are many reasons to prefer NY Republicans over NY Democrats, but a commitment to reduce the cost of government isn't one of them.

The real fiscal power in NY is held, and exercised, on a thoroughly bipartisan basis by public employee unions and by hospitals, real estate developers, and government contractors and all of their workers' unions.

Short of a true political revolution, the only change which is possible is change which doesn't impact the power base. And that political revolution will never occur so long as the finance and media firms stay around. Those are the ur-source of all real money in the metropolitan area: with them, enough people still make more money in the metropolitan area, after tax, than they could make anywhere else.

"I was going to say a comment about people wanting to get out of new York, but I think I learned not to say what's on you mind all the time on the free Republic!"

Relax and speak your mind. FR has its share of Dim disruptors but the vast majority of people on FR welcome all opinions.

To paraphrase Margaret Thatcher, the New York dem/socialist party is soon going to run out of people to tax

Oh, there are still plenty of people there, it's just that so many are "undocumented".

I'm glad that people are leaving New York. Again. It's more for me to have.

Remember New York: High crime, rude people and extremely high taxes!
