#####Six Bombs Found on School’s Sports Ground in Russian Dagestan
Created: 17.05.2006 11:16 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 11:16 MSK

Six trinitrotoluene (TNT) blocks were found on the sports ground of a school in the Dagestani town of Kizilyurt, believed to be the target of a school hostage seizure, sources from the republic’s Interior Ministry told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

According to the sources, bombs ware found when specialists were checking the school and its compounds after an operation to liquidate two gunmen had been completed.

“A scheme of the school with ways of approach to it plotted was found in the pocket of one of the killed gunmen,” they added. According to operation information “militants were planning to seize the school and take hostages,” they stressed.

Two militants so-called Emir of the Buinaksk Zone, Ibragim Ibragimov and Abdulmajid Kabashilayev, were wiped out in a special operation held in Kizilyurt on Tuesday. Eleven policemen, two staffers of the emergencies ministry and a local resident were wounded, one officer of police task force was killed in the operation.

The rebels had blockaded themselves in an apartment in Kizilyurt, a town northwest of the local capital, Makhachkala. Special forces surrounded the block of flats and stormed the building.

Both killed militants are on the federal list of wanted criminals for a number of terrorism-related crimes. On May 6 they managed to escape, when a special operation was held in the Buinaksk district of Dagestan.

The poor and mainly Muslim North Caucasus is a hotbed of violence and instability. Gun battles are common in Dagestan, a patchwork of ethnic groups and powerful clans that neighbors Chechnya, where separatist guerrillas have fought Russian rule for more than a decade.
