Afghanistan Calls for Crackdown at Border
(Full Story)

Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terrorism along the Pakistani-Afghan border, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday.

Rahim Karimi said in the news conference that Afghanistan need greater "cooperation" from both its eastern neighbor and the international community in its battle against Islamic militants.

Coalition and Afghan forces have in recent days been fighting fierce battles against Taliban fighters near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Florida Terrorism Co-Defendant Deported (al-Arian's buddy)
AP/TBO ^ | 5-24-06 | Elaine Silvestrini

Posted on 05/24/2006 11:09:31 PM PDT by STARWISE

A co-defendant of a former college professor accused of terrorist ties has been released from jail and deported, more than five months after his trial ended, his attorney and federal officials said Wednesday.

Sameeh Hammoudeh's attorney had sued the government this year to try to expedite the deportation, and a federal judge had given immigration officials until Wednesday to deport him or explain why they continued to hold him.

Federal officials Tuesday took Hammoudeh, 46, to Jordan, where he crossed into the West Bank to be reunited with his wife and six children, said his attorney, Stephen Bernstein.

"He's home in the West Bank," Bernstein said. "He's in Ramallah."

Hammoudeh was charged with raising money in Tampa for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a terrorist group that has carried out suicide bombings against Israel. But jurors acquitted him on all counts, saying there wasn't enough evidence.

The same jury acquitted Sami Al-Arian, a former University of South Florida professor, of eight counts but deadlocked on nine others. To avoid another trial, Al-Arian pleaded guilty to one count of providing services to the terrorist group's members and will spend roughly another 18 months behind bars before he is deported.

Hammoudeh was acquitted Dec. 6. As part of a plea deal in a separate tax case, he and his wife had agreed to be deported; she was deported in February. A former teaching assistant and doctoral student at the university, Hammoudeh had been in jail since his arrest in February 2003.

The Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement continued to hold him, despite getting permission from Israel on April 20 for him to enter, according to Bernstein.

ICE spokeswoman Barbara Gonzalez said the delay was partly caused by the need to get documents in order.

"Anti-terror police quiz suspects"

ARTICLE SNIPPET #1: "More than 500 police took part in the operations in Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, Middlesbrough, London and Liverpool.

Three of those held were detained under anti-terrorism legislation and five under immigration laws.

Raids continuing

Two other people were arrested, but later released.

The eight detained men are reported to be Libyans.

The Home Office confirmed five of the people held were detained under the home secretary's powers to "deport individuals whose presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good for reasons of national security".

One of the men arrested in Manchester is Libyan-born Tahir Nasuf, a 44-year-old.

He moved to Manchester in 1993 and is married with four children.

The offices of a charity he works for - the Sanabel Relief Agency - were also raided in Birmingham.

The operation is being led by Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) anti-terrorist unit, and the searches using warrants issued under the Terrorism Act 2000, are likely to continue for at least the rest of the day.

The BBC's Nick Ravenscroft said it was beginning to emerge that the raids probably centred on activities in Iraq."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A spokeswoman for the Greater Manchester force confirmed an "extensive operation targeting individuals suspected of facilitating terrorism abroad" was under way.

She would not confirm the exact nature of the alleged offences."

****Nine Tons of Fireworks Seized on LI****

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Police officers who stopped a rented truck that was tailgating a fuel tanker on a highway say they made a potentially explosive discovery, 18,000 pounds of fireworks, enough to destroy property up to five blocks away.

"It would have devastated a quarter-mile radius if they had gone off simultaneously,'' Suffolk County Police Department spokesman Robert Boden said Wednesday.(snip)

Service Alert: Northeast Corridor Power Outage

Updated 10:30 am EDT

At 9:23 am, electric power was restored to the Amtrak line between Perryville, Maryland and Washington. Perryville is approximately 40 miles north of Baltimore. Trains are moving under their own power between those points, but train service on the remainder of the Northeast Corridor northward to New York remains stopped as Amtrak crews work to restore power on the remainder of the route.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. today, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line experienced a major power outage affecting train propulsion power from Washington through New York Penn Station to a point in Queens, NY. At this time, Amtrak trains and other trains using the Northeast Corridor in the affected area (MARC, SEPTA and New Jersey Transit) are standing at various locations between Washington and New York.

Amtrak’s first priority is to use diesel locomotives to remove several trains from tunnels in New York and Baltimore. One Amtrak train has been moved from the B&P tunnel in Baltimore and three New Jersey Transit trains have been moved from the Hudson River Tunnel. Currently, one Amtrak train remains in the Hudson River tunnels, and a diesel locomotive is being dispatched to pull it clear of the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Amtrak is working to restore power from the substations along the route to the electric power lines that supply power to trains along the route.

The cause of the power outage is not known, and Amtrak is investigating.
