FOX News Alert: U.S. Marines in Afghanistan Open Operation Mountain Lion
FOX News Cable | April 12, 2006

Posted on 04/12/2006 1:45:28 AM PDT by the_Watchman

The U.S. military has announced that the largest air assualt in 4 years in Afghanistan is underway in Kunar province. It was kicked off 15 hours ago, but a news embargo was imposed. An attempt has been made to keep the Al Queda and Taliban opposition contained so that they will not escape.

Several thousand coalition soldiers are involved. The exit passes are being held since it was believed that too many opposition forces escaped during the previous Operation Anaconda.

He has been moving around to different places and I am not sure the pakistanis and afganis are helping us. We are wusses when it comes down to war in reality.

The reality is the majority of the Afghan's are helping us....however in the regions where UBL (and other HVTs are eking out their survival) there are not large numbers of either Afghanis or Pakistanis (and those that are there mostly do not support our efforts...especially on the Pak side of the border....where UBL is).

However that is a very complex situation and for the most part Musharraff has done about as well as can be expected. But further actions are needed and must be done in the coming months by the Pak's -

But also by us.

We are not wusses in the least when it comes to war. We have fought and continue to fight the most successful unconventional war in the history of man. What we have accomplished in the last 4 years in the WOT has been amazing.

That does not mean we don't have some "wusses" or weak-kneed types throughout State, the Pentagon (and of course within the JAG community) which do cause us to be less then completely effective at times.

But each week that goes by our Intel capabilities grow and our OODA loop continues to shorten.

Well, I am waiting. First we had to go through Alyson reporting from the NYC auto show, and now a newspaper war between the NYT and the Post.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. You see we follow the "rules of war". We send our officers to the war college and teach these guys and gals how to fight gentlemanly.
When these barbarians do the things they have been doing I don't think we should follow these rules. They get our heros killed.

Another thing to be aware of regarding Kunar, is that it was where all those schoolchildren were slain yesterday by a terrorist rocket.

Seven children killed as rocket hits school in Afghanistan

Still waiting. Now they are covering some loser named Basil who won't take an oath to support the government when he is installed as a city councilman in Florida.

I think you don't know what you are talking about, but since I don't either, I am not going to argue.

Your approach would get our heroes killed, too. Your open warfare on Islamist-heavy Pakistan, which possesses nuclear weapons that can indeed reach our troops in Afghanistan, would not be pretty.

War's not pretty, Joe. I believe you and I are violently on the same side here. I just wish you'd try to view the good that's been done by some incredible folks, and not always focus on the negative.

No matter how much you, me or others in cyberspace know or don't know about the GWOT, most of us will never have any significant role other than as troop supporters. Some people on FR have been heroic in their efforts to support our troops through words and actions. But overall I think this forum has fallen far short of its potential. And I find that especially sad, given the stakes.

Bin Laden is of course living off his legacy. And, its a roll of the dice if and when we will get him. That said I think it would be a good idea to use more of our Sunni strategy in Iraq with the tribal leaders in Pakistan. Start offering them money, gifts, and land for favors and worm your way in with those who care more about their pocket book. I understand the rigid family and tribal loyalties up there, but no where in the world does money not talk.

It would be nice to get a few more Taliban leaders in our pocket. Many of these people can be bought for the right price, hell Mullah Omar would sell out Bin Laden and his first born child for the right price. We don't have to go anywhere near that far, but if it were up to me I would try splitting the Taliaban like we did the insurgents between the greedy ones and the fanatical insane ones.

Of course on the other side of hte Middle East Zarqawi is biding his time and now planning big time something that will hit the gold or silver standard for terrorist attacks.

Zarqawi has hit the bronze award a thousand times for hitting US and Arab targets in the Middle East, but to this day he has never hit what is considered the terrorist silver or gold standard. The silver standard is considered an attack on Europe. The Gold Standard is an attack on the US or Israel.

My guess is he is going after the silver standard strike of hitting Israel.

One thing Zarqawi doesn't want to do is turn European and US public opinion back toward the war, which is why I believe he is hesitant to order suicide attacks in Europe even though his ego is pushing him in that direction.

If you ever read the transcripts of his speechs he constantly refers to articles in the Washington Post and the NY Times. He knows as much as anyone that the center of gravity of the war effort is in the west.

Multi-tasking is a buzz word that I dislike. There are times when performing multiple tasks are required, but in many, if not most, times performing multiple tasks leads to less than desired results for one or more the tasks performed,i.e accidents or omissions are more common when performing multiple tasks.

I think multi-tasking is best-suited for jobs which don't take too much brainpower. I right now am listening to Fox for news on Operation Mountain Lion, posting here, running a load of laundry, and doing spot cleaning during the commercials. None of this requires my undivided attention.

If I were trying to write an article with links, or doing taxes, I wouldn't have the TV on and would be focussing only on the task at hand.

Looking around the web I still find nothing on this. The Pentagon must not be releasing anything. Miklaszewski was just on with Imus and only talked about Iran. He usually has his finger on the pulse. Anyone have a link?
