WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate compromise on an overhaul of immigration law appeared to get bogged down late on Thursday in the face of opposition by some Republicans who say it would give amnesty to lawbreakers.
It appeared unlikely the Senate would approve before a two-week congressional break on Friday the radical immigration reform that would give millions of illegal immigrants a chance to earn U.S. citizenship.
The bill's backers expressed fear that failure to enact the legislation before lawmakers leave for their spring break could hurt its chances in a congressional election year.
Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada earlier hailed a "breakthrough" on the compromise bill that would include a guest worker program sought by President George W. Bush.
But the two leaders were unable to agree on how many amendments to the bill would be allowed.

It is struggling for passage because of amendments not being added? LOL
Oh give me a break.
Usually it's the other way around. A good bill is wrecked by amendments. A good bill can and should stand on its own.
IF this isn't an orchestrated stunt in the U.S. Senate to enable a weaker, but still bad bill...
Then it's not being held up by amendments. It's held up because Senators are afraid they've pushed LEGAL American citizens that VOTE too far.
They have been told enough times, so if they haven't realized it by now, I don't know what it is going to take to get their attention. One thing that Frist needs to do is fine his spine and kill this sellout immigration bill. Next we need from the Republican leadership some Straight Talk, not from but to the Straight Talk man himself Senator McCain. GOP leadership should tell McCain that he needs to shut up and to quit making deals with the likes of Kennedy and Feingold. The GOP leadership needs to make him understand that he is not Senate majority leader, he is not President and will never be because the base hates his guts. If McCain wants to go support his Dim friends, so be it. He is welcome to move to the other side of the aisle. McCain won't because he would get his head handed to him in the next election.

Yes, you're right.
IOW: Reid doesn't want any increase in border security that would keep out those who will be seeking amnesty in 20 years.
Wait until the illegals become eligible for College Student Aid. Legal kids from poor families will not be able to get an education.
Even if all the usual suspects vote for cloture (i.e. Specter, Chaffee, Snow, Collins, Chaffee, Graham, McCain) they'd still need another 8. Hagel and Menendez will vote for cloture since it's their compromise bill, so that brings it to 6. Frist will be interesting to watch - he has to know that a "yes" vote dooms any chance he has at the nomination.
Have you heard of any other Pubbies in support yet? Interesting that it hasn't been breathlessly reported that the votes needed have been reached. "
FYI the vote for cloture was defeated 39 for 60 against. All Republicans voted nay and 3 democrats voted nay the rest voted yea. The Dems were Conrad and Dorgan from North Dakota and Byrd from West Virginia.
I would say the Pubbies must have called in for their messages.
Keep the pressure on until you hear they are adjourning.

They don't think "the base" is stupid.
They think "the base" is OWNED.
They think that they can do whatever the hell they want, and then whip us into line by going "Boo! What are you gonna do, vote for Hillary?"
So, the question of the hour -- are we OWNED?
Frankly, I have come to the same conclusion that the "G"OP focus groups and analysts have come to: Yes, we are OWNED. They can $#!+ on us day after day, and come election day, they'll go "Boo! Hillary!", and we'll go all weak in the bowels, and race down to the precinct and vote "R" as fast as our feet can go.
He might just be a #2, trying to pay his bills.

Maybe. But first we'd have to go to Mexico, and then sneak back across the border.

www.NumbersUSA.comPhone your Senators one last time before the scheduled 9:30 a.m. vote on the Hagel amnesty. The Senate switchboard is 202-224-3121 . Key messages are: "The Hagel/Martinez substitute is 95% of the Judiciary Committee's amnesty that was voted down Thursday. Oppose the Hagel amnesty and vote NO on cloture that would bring the Hagel amnesty to a vote.
This offers an amnesty path to citizenship for nearly all the illegal aliens in this country. If you vote for cloture, your constituents will know that you have supported amnesty."
In all my years on FreeRepublic, I have not experienced as much despair over our future as I do now. I hope you join these organizations and set the FAXes and telephones burning before the Senate vote takes place.
Thank you . . . Penny
On a KFYI (Phoenix) news clip today John McCain said ".... compared to what we have now, this (reform) bill is nirvana."
Smoke from the tar pots and plucked chickens running about clued them in.
Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure
Take a hike... You are clueless
They became criminals the instant they crossed the border without legal entry papers. period.
