Papers: Cheney Aide Says Bush OK'd Leak
Associated Press ^ | 4/6/06 | Pete Yost

Posted on 04/06/2006 9:12:16 AM PDT by rwfromkansas

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney's former top aide told prosecutors President Bush authorized the leak of sensitive intelligence information about Iraq, according to court papers filed by prosecutors in the CIA leak case.

Before his indictment, I. Lewis Libby testified to the grand jury investigating the Valerie Plame leak that Cheney told him to pass on the information and that it was Bush who authorized the leak, the court papers say. According to the documents, the authorization led to the July 8, 2003, conversation between Libby and New York Times reporter Judith Miller.

There was no indication in the filing that either Bush or Cheney authorized Libby to disclose Plame's CIA identity.

"Libby's participation in a critical conversation with Miller on July 8, 2003 "occurred only after the vice president advised defendant that the president specifically had authorized defendant to disclose certain information in the National Intelligence Estimate,"

This misrepresentation pisses me off. The President has ultimate classification authority in the U.S. government, and it sounds like he followed the law and declassified portions of the NIE.

All classification authorities begin and end with the President.

UPDATE:

DAVID ENSOR OF CNN SAYS THIS IS COMPLETELY INCORRECT.

He quoted from the document in question.

What it states is that Libby claims VP Cheney told him the president okayed some of the info from the intelligence estimate being released. That is what was authorized by the president according to Libby.

NOT the name release at all.

Of course, it is within the right of the president to declassify info, which is what the story is now.

The original AP story, which has now been corrected to their updated story in this thread, was completely wrong.

Pete Yost should be fired for such an incredibly incorrect interpretation of the document. Beyond the pale.

the original story was that he said it was okay to leake Plame's name. That has been corrected to just some info from the National Intelligence Estimate regarding IRaq.

No. Keeping it in the headlines is bad for Bush, therefore, simply keep repeating it over and over and over, till everyone THINKS it is true.

"Defendant testified that the circumstances of his conversation with reporter Miller — getting approval from the president through the vice president to discuss material that would be classified but for that approval — were unique in his recollection," the papers added.

---------------

"to discuss material that would be classified but for that approval"....

Fitzgerald has got to be one of the most disingenuous liars lawyers in DC.

He very well knows that when a document is "classified but for that approval" [by the President], then the letter of law has been followed, and it is no longer classified , since the President has ultimate legal domain over the classification and declassification of government materials.

For those of you confused, I posted the original AP story on here, which said Libby said Bush authorized the leak of Plame's name (obviously to save his own butt).

But, THIS IS NOT TRUE, and the AP story was corrected later, and corrected on this thread without any note that it was done.

Instead, it is just a story about Bush supposedly declassifying some Iraqi intelligence data.

No big deal at all.
