DICK MORRIS - "Suddenly it's a race" (Spencer vs. Hillary)
NY POST ^ | 4/6/06 | Dick Morris

Posted on 04/06/2006 4:23:10 AM PDT by nycfree

HILLARY VS. HILLARY April 6, 2006 -- HILLARY may need to break into a sweat after all.

In the wake of Jeanine Pirro's awkward withdrawal from the race, many assumed that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's only re-election challenge would be trying to beat the New York blowout record set by Sen. Chuck Schumer in 2004. But the latest poll by John Zogby indicates that Hillary suddenly has a food fight on her hands.

In his first poll after Pirro dropped out on Jan. 13, Zogby had Hillary ahead of GOP challenger John Spencer by 61 percent to 31 percent. But in his most recent survey, conducted March 27, her margin had fallen to 54-33.

Hillary's drop did not reflect any aggressive paid media push by Spencer. He has yet to run his first ad. Rather, Hillary is losing the key contest of Hillary vs. Hillary - her negatives are rising.

In New York City, she dropped from a 68-19 lead to 62-25. In the suburbs, she fell from 55-36 to 48-41. Upstate, her edge went from 57-38 to 43-42.

Suddenly, it's a race.

Animating Hillary's drop are losses on all ends of the political spectrum. She's down by six points among Democrats, and by 12 with Republcians. But her key falloff is among independents - from 64 percent to 49 percent.

This dose of negative poll data may well prompt the Clinton campaign to dip into her her vast war chest to go on-air with ads. But if Spencer raises the money his current standing in the polls deserves, he'll be able to counter Hillary and erode her lead further.

"...I'd love to see her forced to drop out though because even that would have many/most Democrats saying that if she can't win in New York there's no way she can win nationally....."

Not only that, if she does drop out at the last moment her Dem replacement would be coming in at a weak point and could easily lose to Spencer...giving another Senate seat to the Republicans.

Hillary does not deserve to be a dog catcher.

She probably has no idea as to how to catch a dog anyway.

Cankle vs Cankle.

Sounds like the only war the French won....the French revolution ....when they fought themselves.

Focus on winnable races in other states, increase the majority and be happy.

If spending $1,000,000 in NY causes Hillary to have to spend $3,000,000, then that is $3,000,000 that the Dims will not have available to spread around in red states. Incumbents have to run more conservative races, spending money just to be sure of the win. Challengers get more bang for the buck. Also, the GOP raises more hard money. Forcing Hillary to spend hers on a race that is already "in the bag" is good for the GOP across the board.

Spencer has as much chance of beating Hillary as I do.

Is little Dickie trying to create some hype where there isn't any yet?

Little Dickie probably has another book in mind.

"She can be beaten."

And how! It would be a HUGE psychological knife into her gut if she lost. That's why helping Spencer to win is everything to me. I won't give up trying to get the clintoons out of our lives, even if I can only donate a small amount to help Spencer. If her numbers continue to nosedive, she's going to bave a lot of trouble and I for one will be LMAO down here in the red state of Florida.

Chuck Schumer won re-election with 71% of the vote. Hillary will never get that because she is not popular in NY, and well, she is Hillary.

It will be very hard for Spencer to defeat an incumbent Senature with big bucks but it can happen..just ask Al d'Amato. What Spencer can do is close the race and make Hillary struggle for votes. If she doesn't win at least 60-65% of the vote in very liberal NY, how could she ever win the country?

I never saw as many Republicans who are ready to let a sheitbird like Hillary get a free pass into a Senators job as there have been in this thread. Whatever it costs to make her look bad is money well spent. Even if she wins she is bound to ruin herself nationally if she is pressed hard. She isnt that smart. She protects herself by changing the subject and making general statements . If her nose is held to the grindstone she will fail miserably.

You are so right! I will do whatever I can to ensure she fails at re-election. I am thrilled that she's now got a fight on her hands. Anything that makes her look bad is GREAT. Hahaha...especially a muddy mess of a campaign.

I honestly think comrade clintoon isn't thrilled at her desire to run in 08 because it would take the spotlight off of him. He may put the kibosh in her plans yet.

BUAHHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAH!
