Many voters are tired of pro-Washington governments that have failed to raise living standards in one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest nations.

More of John sKerry's "foreign leader" pals.

That photo reminds me once again just what sorry pieces of trash those two senators were and are. They fought President Reagan every step of the way. Thank God he still won the Cold War despite their treasonous activities.

this stuff doesn't happen because people want a Soviet-supported government, or think the Warsaw Pact countries were nice places to live - it happens because the elected pro-american governments are just as corrupt as anyone and blatantly promote their own interests while letting a fair amount of the population live under onerous labor laws and starvation wages. Of course they will elect someone else, this is the general reason chavez got elected in '98, plus probably any number of other anti-US politicians in the region.

I can promise you many of the folks voting sandinista don't give a fig about China, the US, iran/iraq/cuba/russia/or any of the other foreign issues that are discussed on this board - they are just looking for anyone who will seem to understand or promote their interests (i.e. food on table daily, labor laws that don't amount to a license for employers to treat employees like serfs, etc.) Sometimes they get something useful, and sometimes an absolute nutcase gets in (chavez).

"Many Nicaraguans fear a new U.S. free trade deal will just add to the flashy shopping malls selling imported luxuries from toys to surfboards that dot the capital."

Wow, the Buchanan-Ortega ticket , what a concept.

"Governments have still not restored Managua from a 1972 earthquake."

... so the Sandinistas did absolutely nothing to fix this... hmmm.

"Slums and empty shells of buildings lie yards from the presidential palace."

At least the palace isnt in an exclusive neighborhood! :-0
