McKinney incident referred to U.S. Attorney's Office

The Associated Press - ATLANTA

Capitol Hill police have referred a scuffle between one of their officers and U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., a spokesman for the office said Monday.

"We are working with Capitol Hill police to fully understand and appreciate the incident," principal assistant U.S. Attorney Channing Phillips told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "Pending review, it is inappropriate for us to comment any further at this time."

Phillips would not say whether a warrant was issued for McKinney's arrest.

McKinney spokesman Coz Carson on Monday also acknowledged the investigation.

"We're aware that the wheels are turning in Washington," Carson said. "We have no control over what they decide to do. We will make the appropriate statement and take the appropriate action once we know where they're going."

At a press conference Monday morning, black clergy and lawmakers came the defense of the firebrand congresswoman. McKinney smiled as her supporters heaped praise on her leadership and her new look _ her trademark cornrows replaced earlier this year by a curly brown afro.

Nancy Pelosi has already defended her. On Friday she called this a non issue, and told reporters it was ''pathetic'' to even discuss it.

My sentiments exactly as spoken to my wife approximately an hour after the incident was first reported by the media (long after Drudge disclosed it). Every mention of the disgusting behavior on McKinney's behalf would have been accompanied by the video tape if a Republican had been involved.

If I were a betting man, I'd say we will never see the tape of the entire incident if we see any video tape at all.

Interesting read on some of McKinney's contributors.

And we should allow someone with this sort of affiliation access to the nation's capitol with absolutely no security check?

Cynthia goes back to work after a two year hiatus. The black guard recognizes her but the white guard doesn't. This is the segment that is tauted as racist in the American Blackout movie she plays in.

McKinney Admits Misusing Taxpayer Money

POSTED: 3:40 pm EDT April 3, 2006
UPDATED: 3:57 pm EDT April 3, 2006
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Cynthia McKinney admits that she broke government rules by spending money to fly a celebrity to Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News has uncovered documents showing McKinney, D-Ga., spent about $1,000 of taxpayer's money to fly singer Isaac Hayes to Georgia to help dedicate a new office in Atlanta.

The money came from a fund members of Congress are supposed to use for office supplies.

Using the money to pay for Hayes' airline ticket and hotel expenses is a violation of strict congressional rules. Those rules state that taxpayer money can only be used for "travel by Members, Members' employees and vendors. A vendor is an employee of a private company that provides maintenance and support for equipment and software..."

Watchdog groups call taxpayer-funded celebrity travel a blatant waste of taxpayer money.

McKinney staffers say they will reimburse the congressional fund for the cost of Hayes' flight and hotel room.

That's the reason for the silence from the opposing elected class.
They see no reason to bring attention to their preferred status.
The unwashed masses of the electorate may become upset and demand they be treated like them.

McKinney said that government security officers often fail to recognize her and treat her like a criminal suspect. Her staff members are defending her by distributing a clip of her from the new film “American Blackout.” As McKinney shows the filmmaker around the capitol grounds, a security officer fails to recognize her at first and stops her.

“That’s just typical of the type of treatment I receive. It’s typical. So, I’m not surprised and I’m not offended,” McKinney said in the film. “Okay. Thank you. Some things never change."
