Hurling obscene epithets at her isn't going to help.

The principal may be reluctant to create an "I forgot" precedent that will let students who bring weapons to school intentionally claim they just forgot about it later if it's discovered. I still think that's crummy rationale, because there's no harm in letting a student turn in a knife or something before it is discovered rather than after.

The crux of the matter, as you indicate in your last sentence, is that the student proactively did something to avoid continuing to break the rules. In recognizing that having the knife was against the rules, and then by trying to turn it in, the boy did right (I'm not talking about the rule itself, BTW).

No good deed...

Is there a need for her to take any of those things to school?

Well knives can be mighty handy tools, and Swiss Army knives, with all the tweezers, toothpicks, screwdrivers, etc, even more so. Since girls often carry purses (my younger one did and does not, and she's 26 and a PhD student) and so could easily carry the larger versions of the Swiss Army Knife. And if some scum bag gets a bit too familiar and doesn't take "NO" for an answer, well the tool could be put to good use then as well.

Some schools have, or had, rifle and shotgun teams, so then there would be a reason to take one of those to school as well.

I just don't care either way about you or your feelings towards me. I would ask that you follow the accepted rules of posting as this is JimRob's place -- not yours or mine.

I agree. A "no tolerance" policy is not threatened by permitting students who have accidentally brought a "weapon" to school to turn it in. If the story is accurate, the principal's position is stupid because its creating an incentive for students to hide weapons.

Unfortunately, there are lots of gang members in the schools these days, and they like to cause harm. If the knives get in the hands of these guys, they can cause trouble.

Yea, and I'm sure they obey the rules about not taking knives into the school. Riight.

However, our school district has a similiar policy.

I think it's a completely stupid policy. I think the people who instituted it are whiny morons. I won't say what I think of the people who enforce it.

That stated, one of my students did bring in a knife (by accident) a few months ago.

**GASP** Oh! The Horror!

I guess it's the accidental part ... I'm not sure I'd trust a fellow who didn't know he had a knife in his front pocket.

I brought my knife to school quite deliberately, every day. My teachers would occasionally ask for help opening boxes and the like.

Sorry, wrong again. I'm not and have never been a member of the NEA or a subsidary. I have a corner of my classroom dedicated to my favorite presidents--all republicans--and take heat all the time from fellow teachers about my Bush '04 sticker on my car.

Just because we disagree on one part of one issue does not demonize me or you. Since when do all conservatives have to be lock-step agreement or be accused of being liberal?

Then you may have been with my nephew, who shoots for the team affiliated with North Star, IIRC. It's his second year and last year he did very well in the state meet at Doniphan. Placed just out of the top 10 after the shoot off. Competed with his grandfather's old JC Higgens, but has a new gun this year.

To: t1b8zs; everyone

They are aligned with the school districts
who pass out condoms so 3rd graders and
expel kindergartners for sexual harrassment.

Way to go mindless idiots!!!!

Stupid...no common sense. What do you expect from liberal demotrash whose main goal in life is to usurp a parents rights in addition to continously ripping the emotion and common sense out of children?

They want to create robotic humans who don't think and feel, especially who don't think and feel what THEY are doing and taking away from the individual. The end result is tolerance for every imaginable abomination on earth...a liberal pigs dream!!!

Do you have any idea how much damage can be done to a person with a sharpened pencil?

As I posted earlier, back in the olden days when I was in school, just about everyone carried a pocket knife. I got in a fair number of fights growing up. No one ever pulled their pocket knife to use as a weapon. The only time I was ever stabbed was an accident and it was by a kid with a pencil.

A pocket knife is not a weapon. It is a tool. Like most tools, it can be used as a weapon. A sharpened pencil or a pair of scissors would make a better weapon though.

BTW, as I sit my desk at work, I have a 3 1/4" blade Beretta folding knife in my pocket, and several of my coworkers have similar sized knives that they carry on a daily basis as well.

You better hope JimRob does not have a zero-tolerance policy.

Geez. When I was 7 in 1957, all boys carried pocket knives

Sure did, and a 15 year old could walk into a gun store, put his cash on the counter and walk out with a new rifle.
Are we safer now?

This kid had the knife in the pocket of his heavy coat.
