Oh, geez. That severed the passenger compartment. I guess the blessing is they can hold up to 75 people (IIRC), and these early reports are only stating 17 on board (including crew).
Was there a crash there?
I presume Gaffer meant that's where the flight originated.
Near there, it was the only other crash outside of VN at the time. I believe they attributed it to Pilot Error (accidentally hit reverse thrusters).....

We lost a C-130 in 1991 with 5 on board. The unit was devestated for a while.
C-5. Loved it but not the most relaible. In 1997 in Cairo had a C-5 to pick us up. I broke. Another came and broke as well. went home Cat Y, commercial.
No there was a C-5 crash a few years ago in Germany...

Hope all the crew and Pax survived.
This is one of our worst nightmares. My daughter is loadmaster on the C-17...and there is always that worry about your kid flying these huge birds....they go up but worry like hell how well they come down. And it doesnt help when she lets us know when something isnt 'working right' and they needed to be grounded for the fixes.

I used to fly on C-130s a bunch....two things always amused me....first was, "If we're gonna hit, I'll give three short blasts on the horn, and then one long one right before we hit." The other was that all of the pax in the back could see the 5 (five) parachutes lined up on the forward bulkhead behind the flight deck. We always thought, "Who's gonna be around to blow the horn?"

DOVER (WBOC/AP)- A C-5 airplane crashed at around 6:30 a.m. this morning in a field off of Route 9, about one mile south of the Dover Air Force Base.
According to Tech. Sgt. Melissa Phillips of the Dover Air Force Base, 17 people were aboard the plane and said their conditions are not known. Phillips also said she is not certain if the crash site is on, or off, base property.
Another source told WBOC that the 17 were taken to Kent General Hospital for their injuries. It is not known yet if there were any fatalities.
According to an assistant fire chief with the Dover Fire Department, the plane lost its second engine and the plane crashed. The plane was broken into three pieces: the nose, fuselage and the tail.
A board of officers will convene to investigate the crash. Route 9 is closed near the crash scene. More details forthcoming.
