Your're right Coop. The main passenger compartment is aft of the wing. So I'm right that I was wrong? :-) Seriously, I'm very glad to have been wrong about the compartment's location.

A/C length is 247 feet, wingspan 222.9 feet, height 65 feet.
The pic is a C17, not a C5.

Can you tell from the pics/video feed if the gear was deployed?

I live 100 miles south now, but until 3 years ago I lived less than a mile north of the base........so I know exactly what you are talking about regarding flying low.

I was stationed at Ramstien when the C-5 went down there in 1991. I was renting an apartment in Ramstien Village about 1/2 mile from where she went in. Both my roomate and I were shaken out of our beds by the impact. Quite a shock at 3-4AM to be shaken awake by a huge rumble and Boom and then look out your window to see this huge Orange glow in the woods across the street.
I was tagged for crash site detail too. That was an experience I would like to forget but never will. I smelled like jet fuel for what seemed like weeks afterward. We were givem Masks, hip wader boots, gloves, trashbags, and little red flags. If it was metal we picked it up and put it in a bag, the red flags were to used to mark remains.

Local TV ABC 6 reported that the plane had just taken off when it started to experience difficulties and crashed attempting to land.
At least 10 people were taken to a local hospital and were able to walk with very minor injuries. However a unknown number were choppered to to a trauma center

Bob,
Did your bird ever get stuck in the kneeling position?
Wow, did I really say that? (Only a C-5 FE would appreciate this). I know it used to be a problem early on in the program.

The forward upper deck (flight deck) seats a cockpit crew of six, a relief crew of seven, and eight dignitaries or couriers; it also has two bunk rooms with three beds in each. This area is just in front of the wing.

Nobody's acting like police. They're correcting information. Had I not realized my own error regarding the passenger compartment, I'm quite certain someone would have straightened it out in short order. That's what I love about FR. It's an outstanding source of info.
