George W. Bush is taking time to explain himself, open up to the public in new ways and court the U.S. Congress as he tries to breathe life into a presidency beset by sagging ratings and influence.
With a job-approval rating under 40 percent, Bush, who went to his Crawford ranch for a quiet weekend, has a long way to go. Aides acknowledge it will take a while to rebuild his image, and much will depend on the outcome of the Iraq war.
White House staffers, who have long limited the president's appearances to speeches and photo opportunities with little contact with regular people, are now inclined to let Bush be Bush.
He is talking at length. His March 21 news conference lasted nearly an hour. A Freedom House speech with questions from the audience in Washington on Wednesday went on for an hour and a half.
Bush even took questions from gray-haired retirees at a senior citizens' home recently and they asked some tough ones. More such sessions are planned.
``The president enjoys the open question-and-answer formats,'' White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. ``The more we can put him in settings where people can get a better sense of his thinking and his beliefs, the better.'' SNIP
Democrats are not impressed by the more-open Bush. ``The president can give all the speeches he wants but nothing will change the fact that his Iraq policy is wrong,'' said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

I was referencing your opine against LEGAL immigration . . . As you probably know, the arguments used against previous LEGAL immigrants, e.g., the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, any and all Catholics, and so on, are the same that many are using against today's legal immigrants. History has a way of repeating itself.
And that's just for starters.
And I haven't even mentioned the "wall" or the funds to cough up to fund more agents.
The problem with the illegal immigration issue is AT THE LOCAL LEVEL of government. That's how 11 million illegals got into the country.
Bush didn't do it.
The anti-American networks did it with assistance and enabling at all local levels of governance and its bureacracies. Every local vote DOES matter. It makes the difference between making it cozy for illegals in a district; and booting them back across the border.
We already have LAWS on the books. Who is NOT enforcing them at the local level? Who is your district, your town is enabling the illegal immigrant network? -->THAT'S WHO IS TO BE BLAMED FOR THE CURRENT PROBLEMS.
You think that not punching Fox in the face has anything to do with vetoing legislation?
I never said anything about "yelling at Kennedy" or "punching FOX". You apparently have to put words in my mouth to make your "points". I just want Bush to strongly disagree with them in public. If he doesn't disagree with them and goes along with them how is he different than them?
Bush signed an unconstitutional campaign finance law instead of vetoing it, he has done nothing about illegals invading this country, he's given billions from the Treasury to African countries, he's done nothing about the horrid tax system in this country, he promoted a perscription drug program that takes money from me and gives it to others, he's helped Congress spend money like drunken sailors. Just to name a few thoughts that should flow well enough for you to grok.
I supported Bush for many years and I expected great things from him. Maybe I missed the "great things"? The "critical areas" he's conservative in. Why don't you list those logically for me so I can get off my negativity and back on board the Bush bandwagon?

You are sooooooooooooo right! Thank you for the much needed intervention; I'm leaving NOW!

I've become so disgusted with Bush over immigration and other issues I probably should stop posting about him for a few days. I was such a big supporter of his. If Bush was not president tomorrow it would not bother me a bit. His whole presidency can be put in to one word: "tepid".

You haven't written a single thing differentiating yourself from the poster. You like the tagline too?
Scene Set: A lone mountain.. theme song from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" begins playing.
I *really* wasn't joking in that post. Some folks want big "gun" action all the time. I loved the flick; but I know the difference between a movie and reality...
LOL! You're on a roll girlfriend!
Thanks for your response. I"ve tried to reply but am having computer problems. Hopefully this will go through so you know that I did see your reply.
As far as electing little rich kids I stand by that. I'd like to see self-made people in Congress and in the White House.
I've been very positive about Bush for many years. I worked on his campaigns when he was running for Texas gov.
I don't disagree with a lot of what you want to see accomplished. We probably would approach it in differing ways. I do think you are correct in that we have to be mindful of the impacts upon our economy, etc.
I think one of the best ways to approach this problem is through sanctions on employers. But to do that we have to have a system that allows them to verify the worker has been given papers to work here, pay social security and taxes, etc. Then if they hire illegals the punishment ought to be very strong.
Assets can only be used or spread so thin during the WOT. Thus I think the economic approach maybe more viable at this time. I do agree that border security along the high transit areas needs to be increase.
Again thanks for your thoughts.
It also has the potential of resolving itself very nicely, since most Americans seem to be open (according to at least two polls) to a guest worker program.
Her own local people have betrayed her. Her fellow voters have voted into local office people who are betraying the LAWS ALREADY ON THE BOOKS.
I guess that would explain why they let him make a speech on Friday in which he used the Marxist code phrase, "social justice." If this is the new strategy, it ought to get quite interesting. Maybe a lot of people on the right will finally wake up.
This has the potential of getting very messy!
BTTT....pics don't lie do they?
And you don't see President Bush as a self-made man? I sure do. Some people start with nothing and do plenty with it. Some people start with everything and do nothing with it. I see President Bush as self-made. But then I don't have a hang-up over "class". Poor or rich or middle. People make their own futures.
