Mexican flag burned at Apache Junction HS

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it. "I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me."

He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated.

Freshman Chelsea Garcia, 15, and junior Brittany Ramage, 16, said the unrest had more to do with long-running racial tensions at the school.

The week's events might have sparked some anger, Ramage said, "but kids aren't too deep about that stuff."

The Hispanic student who brought the Mexican flag said he was responding to a remark directed at him Wednesday. The flag-raising, flag-burning, and shoving match that followed happened before most students arrived at school.

Six students — three Hispanic and three white — will be disciplined, Principal Chad Wilson said.

Officials with the Apache Junction Unified School District would not specify what punishment the six face.

Wilson did say in a letter sent home to parents that there would be "increased supervision, including additional police officers, on the campus over the next couple of days."

School flagpoles have been lightning rods across the country this week, including an incident in which a Houston high-school principal was disciplined after he flew a Mexican flag underneath his campus' U.S. and state flags.

A new political awareness among students has also been grabbing attention, as thousands have walked out on classes to join rallies in Phoenix and elsewhere. More than 100 students from Mesa's Carson Junior High and Westwood High schools marched in protest on Mesa streets Tuesday.

Yes, all is fine on the homefront, according to one political party.

Good morning.
"Neither of those were tit for tat actions."

A historical example of tit-for-tat occurred when a Nazi bomber mistakenly dropped it's load on a British city and the Brits responded by bombing Berlin and Hitler responded by abandoning the campaign against the RAF and beginning terror bombing against civilians. The circle ended with Germany crushed.

How do you know the silencing of the Spanish language propaganda stations wasn't a tactical move that had no emotion attached to it? We did something similar to the Iraqis.

Never mind, I'm just stirring the pot.

Old Glory
Print Version

"Old Glory''

The name “Old Glory” was first applied to the U.S. flag by a young sea captain who lived in Salem, Mass. On his twenty-first birthday, March 17, 1824, Capt. William Driver was presented a beautiful flag by his mother and a group of local young ladies. Driver was delighted with the gift. He exclaimed, “I name her ‘Old Glory.’” Then Old Glory accompanied the captain on his many voyages.

Captain Driver quit the sea in 1837 and settled in Nashville, Tenn. On patriotic days, he displayed Old Glory proudly from a rope extending from his house to a tree across the street. After Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861, Captain Driver hid Old Glory by sewing the flag inside a comforter. When Union soldiers entered Nashville on February 25, 1862 , Driver removed Old Glory from its hiding place, carried the flag to the state capitol building, and proudly raised it for all to see.

Shortly before his death, the old sea captain placed a small bundle into the arms of his daughter. He said to her, “Mary Jane, this is my ship flag, Old Glory. It has been my constant companion. I love it as a mother loves her child. Cherish it as I have cherished it.”

The flag remained as a precious heirloom in the Driver family until 1922. Then it was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where it is carefully preserved under glass today.

"That's another issue that pisses me off. When Illegals have kids, they should NOT automatically become American citizens!"

Constitutionally, they are NOT citizens. That has been clearly established by reviewing the 14th amendment. That they "are" is another fabrication of an activist liberal judge.

I'm not sure just how horrible the act was.... IF those antennas were used to broadcast a "calll-to-arms" for these idiots not protesting FOR illegals (a truly illegal invasion of the US) then the antennas were being used as a weapon against the US....

Now - I have no evidence of such, but though it prudent to at least throw the possibility of such out there to ponder.

How are the Mexicans supposed to do that on wages from jobs that Americans won't do? I'd follow the money if I could see where the money IS.

Catholic Bishops or Catholic lay-persons should not be encouraging people to break the law. The immigration laws in this country are not morally wrong so Catholics are obligated to "render unto Caesar". We are morally obligated to give humanitarian aid to someone but we should not be baiting people across the border by waving a carrot on a stick at them...

I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or not. But I'll play like it was an actual question.

If 10 million (or even 10%...or 1 million) ILLEGAL Mexicans give $1.00 every Sunday to an organization that HELPS them, hides them, moves them...geee, not a bad gig. That's 52 MILLION a year to their churches.

Not saying you're completely wrong-- but it's a lot of assuming there.

If someone raises a Mexican flag by an American school, a rational response would have been: take down the flag, lock it up, and expel the students responsible.

I respect your position and understand your beliefs. However, the Warrior class has to act at times to protect us from those who would ultimately destroy our Republic. Acts of violence are often a necessary part of defending all that we have. We must never forget to pray to God for forgiveness before going into battle. But, never forget, in the end, it will be the Warriors who defend all that we hold precious.

"As Americans we can solve our problems through reason, not by stupid tit for tat retaliatory acts."

We've already tried that. Our Senate and President are having none of it, and are intent on imposing their tyranny on us through amnesty. I saw a good post in another thread describing the use of our constitutional rights to fight tyranny. There are 3 methods available to us for taking down tyrants.

1) The soap box
2) The ballot box
3) The cartridge box

Here is my take on why it isn't a positive act to burn a Mexican flag,at least in public.
I bet nearly all of us on this forum get righteously pissed-or at least I HOPE they do-when some fool burns an American flag. Its a symbol that we hate to see disrespected.
And while it is obviously dumb and provactive for the Mexican-or Mexican-American-kids to wave Mexican flags,it serves no purpose for American citizens to anger them further and radicalize even more of them by giving their flag a big F You.
The only American flag I have seen photos of being burned at one of these demos was by some Communists a few years back who didn't look Mexican!
