Hispanic groups in the U.S. are planning a major boycott of American life dubbed a day without Latinos to protest proposed legislation that would criminalize illegal immigration.
Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) President Nativo Lopez, one of the organizers of the recent protests in Los Angeles that saw at least 500,000 people take to the streets, said the May 1 "day without Latinos would send a stern message to Washington.
"We are looking forward to a major action in all large U.S. cities where immigrants make up a significant proportion of the workforce, Lopez told Agence France-Presse.
"We are asking people not to go to school, or work, or shopping, and instead to go out and protest against the racist and inhumane measures in this bill.
MAPA and other grass roots Latino groups are also organizing an April 10 protest in 20 major American cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas in a bid to defeat the proposed immigration reform bill, Lopez said.
And a third day of protest is scheduled to take place Saturday in Costa Mesa, a town in Orange County, Calif., that has been a focus of anti-illegal immigrant protests for the past several months.
The citys mayor has pushed a proposal through the city council to train police to nab and deport illegal aliens who commit crimes.
Said Lopez: "We are going there to make a tough statement right in the bedrock of the anti-immigrant movement.
Perhaps not surprisingly, May 1 is also known as "May Day," the International Worker's Day, which is infamously celebrated in Moscow's Red Square and by communists and socialists throughout the world.
Lets all hang out in front of Home Depot or Lowes and get a job that illegals refuse to do,
Don't go away mad, just go away.
Well it certainly set a distasteful precedent.
I love central PA... I think we've been on every mine tour in the state that one can take! We love mines.
I think there is a day proposed in April for a Day Without the Gringos.
We're Americans, we can make a machine that can pick lettuce.
Here, our immigrants are mostly white or Americans. The white immigrants are Russians, and the Americans are Samoan. But I've only been back for about 8 months, so I'm not sure just what the official makeup is. Things have changed a lot since I lived in Valdez.
Imagine the line at Taco Bell.
Good, let them strike. In honor of the strike, will they also stop driving unlicensed, gaining access to social services to which they have no right, and committing the crimes that Americans won't commit?
I say, if you're going to strike, walk out on EVERYTHING!
I'll be impressed if they go back to their nation of origin in protest, anything less is just Drama Queenery.
The local parks are gonna be full that day.
Then you'd love it here. We've got Centralia, where the mine has been on fire for about 35 years. Talk about your cheap real estate! :)
Cool...may 1st, I go to McDonalds and won't get a teller that speaks broken english.

"Should illegal immigrants be allowed to stay in this country and take the jobs that Americans don't want?"
Two observations:
1.) I am quite familiar with the area surrounding L.A. City Hall, and that photograph looks funny, altered. Maybe a fish bowl lens.
2.) What is it with the "Jews"?
And I hope they all get fired.
A day without Latinos would be a breath of fresh air. Bring it on.
Nope and you can still get a yumbo yack, too i'll bet ya!!!
Spread the word. I'm in! Besides thats the day I have to share that generous tax cut I got with both the feds and the state.
