(CBS) The star at last week's Philadelphia Auto Show wasn't a sports car or an economy car. It was a sports-economy car one that combines performance and practicality under one hood.
But as CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman reports in this week's Assignment America, the car that buyers have been waiting decades comes from an unexpected source and runs on soybean bio-diesel fuel to boot.
A car that can go from zero to 60 in four seconds and get more than 50 miles to the gallon would be enough to pique any driver's interest. So who do we have to thank for it. Ford? GM? Toyota? No just Victor, David, Cheeseborough, Bruce, and Kosi, five kids from the auto shop program at West Philadelphia High School
The five kids, along with a handful of schoolmates, built the soybean-fueled car as an after-school project. It took them more than a year rummaging for parts, configuring wires and learning as they went. As teacher Simon Hauger notes, these kids weren't exactly the cream of the academic crop.

Ethanol also effectively leans out the mixture, I believe, which would contribute to detonation. Need a richer mixture, the greater % of alcohol that you're using.
Anyway, I could be confused and it's actually methanol that has a really good AKI, not ethanol. In which case that's just one more knock against ethanol.
50 MPG on diesel should be a given for a passenger car.. If I recall the old Diesel Rabbits explicitely said, if you get less than 50 MPG take it in to the shop immediately.
"Doing you a favor."
yea right...cluck, cluck, cluck...
FYI, Dan Rather was never a Marine, genius and if you had ever been in the Marines you would know that...
you and your fellow flame baiters need to go enlist instead of wasting my time with your inane posts and personal insults
>>>"FYI, Dan Rather was never a Marine, genius and if you had ever been in the Marines you would know that... "<<<<
He was just as much of a Marine as you were, Wannabe
You would think that the engine control system would compensate.
"Wannabe?"
wrong again, genius...
My DD214 says different!
if you even know what a DD214 is? LMAO
Rather didn't make it out of basic.
Your DD214 (if you even have one) reads the same as Dan Rathers does.
PS I have 4 of them
Yea I know, I'm betting Kelly didn't either
LOL! Gotcha. I like Kelly's tagline. He doesn't even know he's identifying himself.

I've noticed something on this thread - when people can't win with facts, they start to insult people personally. It's really very unbecoming.
In a closed-loop fuel injected car, it will, at least within certain limits. Fuel with alcohol will result in excess 02 in the exhaust which the lambda sensor (or equivalent) will notice and the computer will enrich the mixture accordingly. Within certain limits of alcohol % in the fuel. A carbureted engine obviosuly wouldn't be able to adjust to the fuel in this way.
Keith
Kelly won't present his facts. He's been asked several times. Read his posts if you're looking for insults. They're full of them.
"Call me when they rejigger the laws to permit the driving of ultra-light vehicles, etc."
I don't want to drive an ultra-light vehicle through Denver, I want a TANK!
Sorry, but Kelly & I have both shared links on this thread that are chock full of facts. And what do we get in return? Insults. Y'all need to start acting like adults - and if you can't provide any factual detail to refute the issue - be quiet and don't resort to hurling insults.
Actually, I asked Kelly to provide a link. He wouldn't. I don't have to provide any details as I haven't made any claims, just looking for some factual data. I haven't made any statements here one way or the other regarding the advantages of Ethanol vs oil.
If he can't be bothered to support statements he makes then he has no credibility. Besides that, he's a jerk. I fail to see how being a former Marine has anything to do with the issue at hand but thats what he uses to refute any and all questions. Anyway, having learned absolutely nothing on this thread I'm outa here. Unless Kelly wants to come back and tell me what a war hero he is again.
Scroll up the thread....
Links to facts exist.
"Your DD214 (if you even have one) reads the same as Dan Rathers does"
any time you want to put your money where your mouth is just let me know...
but just like my other challenge which you declined,
cluck, cluck, cluck...
I won't be holding my breath! LMAO
