French fantasies: C’est la vie
Manchester Union Leader ^ | March 29, 2006 | Editorial

IN FRANCE millions marched in the streets yesterday to protest a law designed to help people under age 26 find jobs. Protesters insisted the law was unfair because it would not guarantee employment. Mon dieu!

From our vantage point here in highly competitive New Hampshire, it is amazing that young French citizens, nearly a quarter of whom are unemployed, consider conditional employment a breach of the social contract and would rather take welfare than a job from which they could be fired.

Fear of competition is a powerful feeling. When it is institutionalized by Byzantine labor laws designed to produce 100 percent employment, France happens. Thank goodness our ancestors, French and otherwise, took a different path.

Yet the union/welfare/entitlement mentality continues to plague a majority of the US population.

We ain 't as bad as France, but we have no reason to celebrate.

Thank goodness they(we) took a different path, indeed.

The 35 hour work week gives workers to much free time on their hands with nothing else to do.

Has anyone ever made a list of the dumbest reasons to hold a protest demonstration? Cuz this has to be right up there in the top 3.
What a joke!

Oh, I have the feeling that the mass demonstrations this time of year have more to do with the nice spring weather and a desire to cut school than anything else.

Hard to have much sympathy for the French, though... they continue to suffer self-inflicted injuries, don't they?

France is a country that's run like the UAW. Eventually, it will fail.

I had a lot of jobs before I settled in on a career, some of them I was laid off from, some I left because I didnt like, one I was fired from. Each one was a learning experience .

Maybe the French labor force is so bad they need this law there. Thats my guess.

Thank goodness my ancestors got-the-hell out of France!

The Revolution looming on the horizon promises a mass exodus of French refugees--both Christians and "secularists."
