Duke Forfeits Lacrosse Games After Rape Accusation
WRAL ^ | March 26, 2006

DURHAM, N.C. -- The athletics director at Duke University said the men's lacrosse team would forfeit two games as police investigate allegations that team members raped a dancer who was hired to perform at a party.

In a statement released by Duke, athletics director Joe Alleva noted that the players deny the rape allegations and no one has been charged. But he said several players admitted hiring dancers for the party and that underage drinking occurred.

"I am dismayed by the party on March 13," Alleva said in the statement, adding that the behavior is unacceptable.

As a result, the team forfeited its Saturday game against Georgetown and its Tuesday's game with Mount Saint Mary's.

The woman who accused the men said she'd been hired to dance for only five men at a bachelor party. Instead, she said, she and another dancer were surrounded by men when they got there and later got separated.

In a written statement released Saturday, Duke University President Richard Brodhead said he supported Alleva's decision to forfeit the matches, and that those responsible for the alleged crimes would face very serious penalties if the charges against them are verified.

"Physical coercion and sexual assault are unacceptable in any setting and have no place at Duke," Brodhead said. "The criminal allegations against three members of our men’s lacrosse team, if verified, will warrant very serious penalties."

No charges have been filed. About 46 members of the men's lacrosse team submitted DNA samples to authorities this week, but police have not said how long it would be before the results of those tests were known.

What does a dancer have to do with the games?

Sorry, my apologies.

My statement, Idiot doesn't begin to describe what you are, should have been directed at Ninian Dryhope.

You must be the Duke coach.

That's a huge lacrosse team. 46 players. They only need eleven on the field at a time.

Surely they could have narrowed the field down a bit through witness statements, instead of taking DNA from all 46.

Right. And when the boys rape the girls, they get to be the girls in prison. Fair's fair.

It is not alright IF they did rape the stripper at their party.

On the other hand, this woman had to be nuts to go to a college athletic drinking party and strip off her clothing and tease a bunch of drunk guys who are in the prime of their sex hormones and aggression. How utterly stupid is that?

She should not have been raped just as the nut who stands out in the middle of a highway should not be hit by a car or a person who builds a house on the coast should not be destroyed by a hurricane. But some actions are irresponsible because they open one up to risk of harm. That would be the stripper who went to the men's college lax party, in this case.

She set them up big time..Rich lacrosse players who were dumb enough ...The civil suits alone will be staggering..For supposedly bright kids, they sure were dumb AND they broke the law...

She did not set them up. They set themselves up by calling in a stripper and she set herself up by going. Being rich does not make one immune to the temptation of rape. Being a stripper is shows a lack of self respect which might explain why she showed up at a college LAX party to take her clothes off.

Wow...I seriously hope thats sarcasm. For what its worth, I've been an RA here at Ohio State on floors with both freshman basketball players (including Mr. Ohio Basketball one year) and freshman lacross players. While the Lacross players I have this year are good guys, they are the exception. In general I'd take the basketball players any day of the week.

Wow... what an idiotic statement. The crazy person who stands in the middle of the road takes a great risk, but NOT the general risk that someone will intentionally run him down. The risk is that a person will accidentally hit him. I played Lacrosse years ago, and I went to college - never during that time did I accidentally rape a woman. The notion that a dancer at a party deserves to be raped is an idea I thought died out 40 years ago. Your view is reprehensible. These punks oughtta be put away for a very long time.

"The temptation of rape"? I assure you, there is no such thing in a man who is not otherwise criminally inclined.

So far the only thing that has been admitted is that the boys hired dancers for the party and that underage drinking occurred, which is pretty normal for college kids. Everything else is still under investigation and is based on the allegations of a person of dubious character.

I do not see her statement as idiotic. In the military we are told to use locks on our lockers to keep honest people honest. What you do is remove the temptation. I did not get that Galveston Grl was saying this woman deserved to be raped. I understood her to say that because of her profession and the environment she put herself in, it should come as no surprise this happened. It is still wrong but it is not as shocking as say the lacrosse players broke into a womens dorm at Duke and raped left and right.
