From what I read this cult was not your run-of-the-mill Church of Christ denomination.

There is no such thing as a "Church of Christ denomination", unless you are speaking of the ICOC(International Church of Christ) or possibly UCC(United Church of Christ).

The Winklers were members of the "regular"(for lack of better word) Church of Christ. Not a cult.

So one badly educated "pastor" from a baptist church comes on CNN (of all places) who obviously has a prejudice against the church of Christ and calls it a cult and everyone is ready to believe it is. After hearing what this guy spewed on Nancy Grace last night I have to believe he is sour because too many of his members left his church to go to the church of Christ because he was a terrible preacher.
In Texas, there are two big differences between the Baptist church and the church of Christ. The first is the piano, the second is the address.

I don't know about the CoC in Selmer but I can assure you the one in McMinnville where he was youth minister is very normal. Its a beautiful old church with a very normal congregation.
