Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.
Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.
Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.
"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.
Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.
Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children — Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 — were gone.

I wonder, if true, that this could be "steroid Psychosis". One of the treatments for lupus is prednisone and it will cause Psychosis in high doses or long term use.
Their neighbor said he was very aggresive. Neighbors have a dog and he told them he would shoot dog if he came around! Said he had kids and didn't want dog around them. She thought he was kind of a bully.
I wondered exactly the same thing. There are people on other forums speculating that she looks like she could be pregnant, because she looks so different from the family portrait we all saw.
My thoughts were that her face looked puffy, like moonface from prednisone.
The children *did* attend - good!

SELMER — Mourners filled a small-town church Tuesday to remember a popular minister shot to death by his wife.
The funeral of 31-year-old Matthew Winkler drew hundreds to the Fourth Street Church of Christ, where he had been minister for almost a year.

The couple's daughters, who are now in the custody of their paternal grandparents, were among family members who followed Winkler's flower-covered casket into the church for the morning service, Police Chief Neal Burks said.
The news media were not allowed to attend the service. Burks said about 500 people were at the service in the church sanctuary or watching it on TV monitors in the building's basement.
"Upstairs is full and the downstairs is full," Burks said.

That's something I've thought of, as in her having the addiction.

Yep, pretty much the case in all of Western Christianity. I would even bet that's what got Matt killed. He was trying to be the 'man of his household' (as witnessed by the 'dog' incident) and just didn't understand that Mary was the real boss. That murderous spirit will come out every time.
See the short little haircut on Mary? That is a woman who is 'of the world' and if Matt was a 'by the Bible' kind of guy, it's no wonder she hated him to death. I'll bet she had no idea he wouldn't let her run things when she married him and just ran out of patience.
And last night on Larry King Live, Jennifer Johnson, a spokesperson for the TBI, said that the TBI has not confirmed to anyone that he was shot in the back.
There is no one justifying what this woman did but it is inconceivable that she was sane at the time either. She had problems in the past with post partum depression which is not a phony disease. Given that history the decision to have more children was just plain nuts.
But Nooo have some more and Home School them that will relieve the stress and help matters immensely. Where was there any indication that the family was not living "cleanly"?
Obviously she could not "take control of her life". And your strength does not mean others share it.
My ex-wife has a lung disease, the treatment was prednisone, that is why she is my ex. Not my choice but hers. When I married her she was the sweetest, meekest person I had ever met. Our first apartment was out by a lake and I came home one day and found her on the counters because she saw a mouse. Like a good husband I went to the store and bought a mouse trap and set it and just as I was about to fall asleep I heard it snap so I figured since it was late I would get it in the morning. When I got up the next morning I found that she had set off the trap and put a paper plate on the floor with cheese on it...she just couldn't stand the thought of me killing that mouse. After she got sick and started taking prednisone she turned 'evil' and there is no other word to describe it. Our marriage ended very, very badly. Neither I nor my two children have heard from her for three years. She is no longer the woman I married.

From what I read this cult was not your run-of-the-mill Church of Christ denomination.
There is no such thing as a "Church of Christ denomination", unless you are speaking of the ICOC(International Church of Christ) or possibly UCC(United Church of Christ).
The Winklers were members of the "regular"(for lack of better word) Church of Christ. Not a cult.
In Texas, there are two big differences between the Baptist church and the church of Christ. The first is the piano, the second is the address.
I did not see what you are referring to. But do not consider the Church of Christ to be a cult.
Another difference (correct me if I am wrong) is that the CoC does the Lord's Supper(communion) every Sunday. Do the Baptists?
I am a 4th or 5th generation member of the church of Christ and it is not a cult...unless you believe that a group that follows the teaching of Jesus Christ is a cult...and birth control is not forbidden in the church of Christ. It never has been. Get your facts straight. And I knew the victims now deceased Grand Father and he was a wonderful man. A great minister and servent of the Lord.
As per Biblical instruction, the churches of Christ observe the Lord's Supper on the first day of the week. Every first day of the week.
I haven't been discussing this killing but beckysueb were speaking of the Yates murders.
BTW I in no way believe the Winkler killing justifiable or the result of any religious conventions or rules. Lady seems to have gone off the deep end as a guy up around here did and killed his young daughter.
