Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.
Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.
Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.
"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.
Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.
Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 were gone.

Troll
Tell me something Colt Fan Man, do you really believe you are the only person going to hell?
I've missed reading or hearing about the prozac until now. Do you know what article or website mentions it?
blu,
no i am not a religous person, and i am for the most part tolerant of other people's religion...except i am not tolerant of things like: muslim countries who will kill someone for practising christianity...or for mormons who demand 10% tithe on gross income even if a family can't make mortgage payments, buy food or pay medical bills (let's face it, the mormon church would rather have 1,000 sinners that pay tithe, than a 10,000 true believers that don't pay tithe - and what does that say??)...or religions that think they are better than people who are not religious yet who are of high moral standard...or those hypocrites within churches that commit unspeakable sins against children, and do it under the cloak of god
...yes, those are some of the things i am not tolerant of...but for the most part, i do agree that most church-goers are good people who strive to live a healthy family life with good morals
...and one last point, i do not think that churches should be tax exempt...why should non-religious people have to pay a higher tax rate, since churches are exempt...let the members pay
actually txroadkill, i have posted a few newsworthy links on this story and a few opinions on motive as well...but yes several of my recent posts have been religion/cult based
...and no i don't think i am going to hell, any more than you are, since i don't think hell or heaven even exist
Didn't King David play the harp?:
Thanks for being brave enough to state your beliefs. Just because you're not a religious person doesn't mean you're not a good person. And besides, God makes the final call, not any of us!
prior to getting too carried away, which Church of Christ are you referring to:
1. United Church of Christ;
2. Church of Christ; or,
3. International Church of Christ?
The UCC seems to be somewhat pro-homsexual, and the International Church of Christ seems, to me at least, to be a bit too cultish in their control over the behavior of their members.
The Church of Christ, based on their web site, does not seem to be cultish.
This happened several years ago in Smithville, Tn. It didn't make the national news like these cases do now. But it was big news around here. I have talked to people who have said Prozac made them feel crazy.
What doe the CoC say about the references to oral sex in Song of Solomon? ;-)
Yes he did. He also sacrificed animals for forgiveness of his sins. When Christ died on the cross, the old covenant died with him. We get our pattern for the church & for worship from the New Testament. In the New Testament, there is no example or command given for instrumental music in an assembly. Some people think its overkill, but we try to follow the New Testament example to the best of our abilities.
Why not the Old Testament?
Song of Solomon is a pattern for physical and spiritual love between a husband and wife. Better than any technique book you could buy on the market today. We had a couple of Sunday morning sermons on it a few weeks ago, strictly G-rated since there were children present. Pretty good stuff!
Like I said, when Christ died on the cross, the Old Covenant for God's chosen people (the Jews) died with him. He established a New Convenant for both Jews & Gentiles. That covenant is described by the inspired writers of the New Testament. The church was established in the New Testament, so it seems the best place to me to find out how the church is supposed to act. We don't ignore the Old Testament, but we certainly don't follow the old law, for example, sacrificing animals for forgiveness of sins, keeping the Jewish festivals, or worshipping on the Sabbath (Saturday).
Well that was my thought after hearing her attorney this afternoon on Fox News. He was already conditioning the jury pool for the diminished capacity defense. She may be mentally ill...but then again, she may be suffering from some sort of post traumatic stress because she came to the realization of the impact of her actions. That could be pretty mentally troubling. I am sure not sold on PPD, because most of the time, women who have PPD kill themselves or the children. Rarely do they shoot their husbands in the back while they sleep. Unless she was going to kill everyone.
Well, I am a 5th generation "C of C'er" as you call me, and I'm proud of that fact. But honestly, I see no need to attempt to answer your absurd question because you don't want an answer (or no answer will satisfy you), you just want to flame a church and her people that you know nothing about. Your intolerance and fear of a religious body rivals that of the Muslim country that would kill someone for practicing Christianity that you referenced in a later post.
Speak of the devil ....

Dream Team Defends Ministers Wife
(Memphis) Leslie Ballin and Steve Farese are familiar faces inside the courtroom. Ballin defended former U of M basketball player Jeremy Hunt against assault charges. He helped Actor Anthony Anderson skate past rape accusations. Steve Farese is representing Michael Hooks Senior in the "Tennessee Waltz Scandal." Now both men are standing behind Mary Winkler---for free. "There are times when lawyers should step up, should try to help in the right case," Memphis Attorney William Massey says.
This case is sure to put Farese and Ballin in the spotlight for months to come. The dream team representing this seemingly perfect mother and wife accused of killing her minister husband. "Even with a confession I think the prosecutor will find this case very challenging," Massey says. Police say 32 year old Mary Winkler confessed to murdering her husband Matthew. But Attorney William Massey says seasoned Attorneys like Ballin and Farese know a confession from Winkler doesn't mean she's guilty of intentional murder. "If a person confessed to the shooting of a person, did they confess, yes, but are they criminally responsible, no," Massey says.
For now both men say they're just trying to get a better understanding of winkler's state of mind. "she has a flat effect, meaning it's like a thousand yard stare," Farese says.
Winkler is back in court for a bond hearing Thursday morning. Massey says more details of the case should come out after Ballin and Farese are more familiar with Winkler's case.
"...so let me get this straight, someone who is a C of C'er will be forgiven for their sins if they are "truly repentant", even if they say kidnapped, raped and killed ten young girls?, and if the ten young girls are not C of C'ers, then they will go to hell?.....is this correct??"
Your post is too absurd to deserve a reply but for the sake of others who might believe your assertion, the CoC does not determine who goes to heaven. God has reserved that judgment for Himself. You post indicates a total lack of knowledge concerning the CoC.
Nor did the Winkler's have FOUR children as also reported by Geraldo. MSM & accuracy just don't mix!
I have always wondered what is the CoC position on the sounding of the trumpet when Christ returns.
