Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.

Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.

Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.

"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.

Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children — Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 — were gone.

She was not to take the anti-depressants prescribed.

It was my understanding she did take antidepressants. She was just careless about whether she took them or not. I think pills can be just as dangerous. Living a clean lifestyle, getting excersise, taking time away from stress and maybe stress management classes would have probably done her a whole lot better. Don't tell me she didn't have time. Her MIL was there every day to relieve her. I had 4 kids in 4 years, an abusive, insanely jealous, control freak, alcoholic husband at the time and if any one had any reason to lose it, I did. You have to take control of your life,. You can't just go around murdering people and say you couldn't help it.

Neighbor Sharon Everitt recalled a different side of Matthew Winkler, that of an extremely concerned father. She and her husband, Dan, had a couple of unpleasant conversations with him about their house dog, a Rottweiler, and a stray Labrador retriever they kept outside, being in the Winklers' yard.

She said he was afraid the dogs would harm his girls and insisted the Everitts keep them contained. She assured him they were harmless.

"He was a little brisk, direct, aggressive," Sharon Everitt said.

I agree with your statement, especially since one of the dogs was a Rottweiler. From the article above I see it as a father being protective of his children. However, on Cosby's show last night, Everitt wasn't as kind in describing Winkler's actions.

I know of people this has happened to and it is a very very bad situation. But 99% of Christians are not like that. When I committed to Christ, I was in a Baptist church. I got so frustrated cause I saw so many people who were supposedly good Christains who were sinning like it was nothing and there seemed to be no self discipline in the church. One day I came to the realization that I am responsible for my own soul and if people want to blindly walk into hell, that is them. I find that most of these incidents happen in the more "holy roller" type churches: the charasmatic movement. Their rules are so strict, that no one can follow them, but they must keep up appearances at all costs, so they do their dirty deeds in secret. But the CoC isn't like that at all. They are very traditional. All churches have their little differences in doctrine. It won't send them to hell if they believe in guitars in church no more then true believers in any church will go to hell for little differences. But all the churches believe they are the only ones going to heaven anyway, so the point is moot, I guess. Jesus made it very simple, as long as you believe in him with all your heart and strive to live like Him, you are saved.

I grew up in the CofC. They are very WORKS oriented in their salvation. There are many rules to abide by..one being baptism. It just isn't that. Many believe that you have to be baptised IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST in order for it to count. You also have to say exactly, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS"...if this is not said during baptism, then some believe that baptism doesn't count either!

Works oriented??? Never! You had to accept Jesus and be baptized(in the CoC of course because they were the only ones going to heaven) Legalistic...always! Big difference.

BTW I also grew up in this church and do not remember the forgiveness of you sins part to the baptism, just the I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit(Ghost) amen, who knows maybe I just don't remember being 25 years ago.

well, having had an idiot neighbors rottweiler go after my 2 daughters when they were little, I would have done, and will do in the future, the same thing. The only thing that saved my daughters was our dachshund, who ran in between the kids and the rottweiler and nearly gave her life. She was very protective of the kids, and when that rottweiler went after them, she went after him and he nearly killed her. The idiot neighbor had to beat the rottweiler with a stick to get it to turn my dachshund loose. I have no use for rottweilers and pit bulls. Would just as soon shoot any of them.

I don't believe he has to wait until discovery to get any transcipts/taping or written confession to a crime by a client he is representating. I'm not a lawyer however so I'm probably wrong.

However, if it was a case of abuse or molestation as he's been tried, convicted and executed by so many in the press and on here, he'd let everyone in earshot know about it.

Maybe he left the toilet seat up once too often....

I agree. I think it is one of those cases where no one will really know why she did it. I think she has strange eyes. Just kind of blank. His eyes seem warm and open, hers are dark and brooding.

Actually, you have oversimplified what Jesus taught. Belief has to be followed by doing as He has commanded in order to come in obedience to Christ.

It is possible that it wasn't a sexual thing at all.

Has anyone suggested drug or alcohol addiction on the part of either one of them?

That can be very often carefully covered in very pious families.

It has been a long time since I was interested in a criminal case and seeing it through. This one interests me.

We'll have to wait until the trial to see her "defense".

An interview with the TBI spokesperson (I think) said that they found evidence in the van and where they were staying.

The lady with the dog was busy yesterday. She was also on CNN. I got the impression she didn't like Matthew Winkler too much.

YES, THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS A CULT!...any church that brainwashes its members that only THEY will go to heaven, and all non-believers will go to hell, is a cult

That definition does not make them a cult. Try the book 'Kingdom of the Cults' for the Christian cults.

And I thought I was the only one who had hangups on the CoC!

Maybe she had just had a REALLY bad first day of substitute teaching, came home in a terrible mood, found him napping, and just snapped.

Remember the guy who claimed he killed because of a lack of sugar rush he got from eating twinkies? It's a possibility

I know of a young boy who was attacked by the family Rottweiler. This might be a rare case - I've heard that Rottweilers are protective of their own family. I sure would not let my children close to a Rottweiler.
