Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked the Bible yesterday to criticize a stringent border security measure that, among other things, would make it a federal crime to offer aid to illegal immigrants.
"It is hard to believe that a Republican leadership that is constantly talking about values and about faith would put forth such a mean-spirited piece of legislation," she said of the measure, which was passed by the House of Representatives in December and mirrored a companion Senate bill introduced last week by Senator Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and the majority leader.
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scripture because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself," she said. "We need to sound the alarm about what is being done in the Congress."
Mrs. Clinton, who is running for re-election this year and is leading in polls for the Democratic presidential nomination, spoke at a news conference in Manhattan with more than 30 immigrant leaders after meeting with them privately.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of mounting urgency, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called on its flock to oppose the measure, and tens of thousands of immigrants around the country stepped up a series of protest rallies in anticipation of a Senate vote on competing immigration bills next week.
Mr. Frist's bill, like the House measure, would make it a crime to be in the United States without proper papers and would add guards and fencing along the Mexican border, and speed deportation.
Some versions, including one proposed by Senator Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, would expand the definition of alien smuggling to include help to illegal immigrants already here.

Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton invoked Jesus to argue against a House immigration bill that would make illegal presence in the United States a felony.
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures," Clinton said, according to the Associated Press, "because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."
Clinton delivered her remarks as the Senate prepared to take up a version of the measure, which passed the House in December.
Unlawful presence in the U.S. currently is a civil offense.
Flanked by New York immigration activists, Clinton called the bill "mean-spirited" and inconsistent with Republicans' professed support for faith and values, the AP said.
Clinton said she hoped the Senate Judiciary Committee would come up with a compromise that would remove the House's severe penalties.
The New York senator said, however, she would back legislation to strengthen U.S. borders and seek more cooperation with Mexico and other neighboring countries.
She also wants to establish a way for the nation's approximately 11 million illegal immigrants to gain citizenship.
While recognizing the distress illegal immigration causes border communities, Clinton insisted Republicans are taking a great political risk in pushing the House bill forward.
"We want the outcome to be that they're on the wrong side of the politics as well as the wrong side of history and American values," she said.
As WorldNetDaily reported, a bill that would give millions of illegal aliens in the United States the opportunity to earn citizenship advanced last week when members of the Senate Judiciary Committee signaled likely passage of a proposal by Sens. Edward Kenney, D-Mass., and John McCain, R-Ariz.
Though a committee vote will not be held until after a week-long congressional recess, likely March 27, committee members appeared ready to back the Kennedy-McCain bill.

Nobody really cared very much about "illegal immigration" back then, for the same reason that "illegal aliens" didn't exist in Biblical times. In both cases the government had very few functions, and providing "free" sh!t like medical care, education, housing, etc. certainly wasn't one of them. The American who settled in the Dakota Territory in the latter half of the 19th century was no different than the German immigrant who lived across the road . . . they both worked from dawn to dusk every day, and neither one of them had any claim on the fruits of the other one's labors. The German immigrant was there for the same reason that the American was there. And the same was true for fishermen, shepherds, and merchants in Judea back when Christ walked on the earth.
When government served minimal functions, there was no reason for a person to immigrate to the U.S. for financial reasons other than what could be gained from the freedom to derive financial gain from his own labor. This all came to an end in the United States when government became nothing more than a massive industry hell-bent on enriching some people at the expense of others.
As I've said here before on any number of occasions . . . illegal immigrants are not a "problem" for this country because they represent a drain on our schools, hospitals, etc. The real problem is that these public institutions ever existed in the first place.

I am not a Catholic, but even as a Protestant who ministers to illegal aliens, I am still concerned. I don't think the Church should harbor criminals, but that HR 4437 seeks to ban goes way beyond that. Short of some reason for santuary or asylum, the Church recognizes the right of a sovereign state to control its borders in furtherance of the common good. It also recognizes the right of human persons to migrate so that they can realize their God-given rights. I agree with the Catholics that these teachings complement each other. I understand you may not.
While the sovereign state may impose reasonable limits on immigration, the common good is not served when the basic human rights of the individual are violated. In the current condition of the world, in which global poverty and persecution are rampant, the presumption is that persons must migrate in order to support and protect themselves and that nations who are able to receive them should do so whenever possible. It is through this lens that the Church deals with the current migration reality between the United States and Mexico.

Well, if the law, as passed, even "could" be used to outlaw a hot meal and shelter for the night to an illegal alien, then I would hope all right-thinking and compassionate Americans "would" oppose that. Maybe not anymore.
Regardless of what inside knowledge you think any religious organization is opposing this proposed law, I am opposing it because it could be used to prosecute for accommodating illegal aliens at soup kitchens, shelters, and child-care services during events. I understand that others in the Church provide more in-depth help, but short of harboring a criminal, I believe that help should not be criminalized.
Good luck with that then.
You would support the government criminalizing "one hot meal and one night's shelter"? How about just offering them Holy Communion during service - would you support the government's right to criminalize that too?

Christians should not harbor criminals.
Those that do are criminals and should expect to be treated as such.
