Construction of what is expected to be the world's tallest building was halted yesterday after 2,500 workers in Dubai rioted over pay and conditions, causing damage estimated at £500,000. The trouble broke out on Tuesday night when buses due to take labourers to a residential camp at the end of their shift were delayed, witnesses said. Workers from the Burj Dubai tower site and surrounding housing developments then chased and assaulted security officers, broke into offices, smashed computers and files, and destroyed about two dozen cars and construction machines, they added.
"Everyone is angry. No one will work," a labourer, Khalid Farouk, told the Associated Press. Other workers said they wanted pay rises: skilled carpenters earn £4.34 a day and labourers £2.84.
Construction workers building a new terminal for Dubai international airport also downed tools in sympathy yesterday, airport officials said.
Burj Dubai is intended to be the world's tallest building when it is completed in 2008. The developers are keeping its eventual height secret in case competitors try to overtake it. So far 36 storeys have been built.

The Abby-Dabby guys need to go to the Home Depot and see what's waiting around......
Was Chucky Schumer in the area at the time of the uprising ? We might never know because he probably accidentally knocked the camera man out as he rushed the camera .

Those that weren't citizens were legal "guest workers" in the true sense of the word and everybody appreciated them (yes, some migrant workers were not only citizens but some were even white).
let them eat sand
Burj Dubai
Isn't Dubai rather prone to earthquakes? Doesn't seem like the place where I'd want to build the world's tallest buildings and underwater hotels, but hey, I don't have that kind of dough, so I'll shut my yack.
Gee, I hope that isn't close to the airport....
Workers of Peace. WoPs.
Watched a show on islands that they had built.
That's a beauty. Too bad they're not building something similar to it in NYC instead of the "Freedom" Tower.
Impressive, I wonder how long the soon to be world record of tallest skyscraper in the world would last. By the way, does anyone have a construction photo of this building?
Doing the jobs Dubaites won't do.
A little trouble in Paradise? Blackbird.
For quite some time I imagine. The Burj Dubai will be about 2250 ft. tall when completed. That is about 725 ft. taller than the current tallest building the Taipei 101.
The Burj Dubai is designed where it can be built even higher. The max height is about 2850 ft. and with the antenna this building could become up to 3300 ft. or twice as tall as Freedom Tower in New York. Should anyone announce a taller building before the completion date of early 2009, they can simply add more floors. They can even add floors after it is completed, but it is doubtful that once tenants move in that this would be possible.
Yup. I saw that too. I don't know if I'd want to own anything on that island sand.
The Freedom Tower should look something like this.
