Huge crowds extend Darwin exhibit in New York
Wed Mar 22, 2:54 PM ET
NEW YORK (AFP) - A monumental Charles Darwin exhibition in New York has been extended by five months amid an overwhelming public response to what was touted as a scholarly rebuke to opponents of teaching evolution in US schools.
The American Museum of Natural History said Wednesday that nearly 200,000 people had visited "Darwin" since it opened three months ago.
Originally slated to close at the end of this month, the exhibition will now run through August 20, said museum spokesman Joshua Schnakenberg.
"Darwin" had opened amid furious debate in many school districts over the teaching of the 19th century naturalist's evolutionary theory and the first trial on the teaching of the God-centered alternative favoured by many religious groups, "intelligent design," or ID.
That trial, in Pennsylvania, ended in defeat for the evangelical right with the judge in the case decrying the "breathtaking inanity" of the school board in the town of Dover which backed the concept that nature is so complex it must be the work of a superior being.
"Our conclusion today is that it is unconstitutional to teach ID as an alternative to evolution in a public school science classroom," the judge said in his ruling in December.
An early section of the New York exhibit is devoted to the question, "What is a Theory?" and seeks to clarify the distinction between scientific theories and non-scientific explanations about the origins and diversity of life.
"This is really for the schoolchildren of America. This is the evidence of evolution," said the exhibit's curator, Niles Eldridge.
In a Gallup poll released last October, 53 percent of American adults agreed with the statement that God created humans in their present form exactly the way the Bible describes it.
Thirty-one percent stood by the "intelligent design" stance, while only 12 percent said humans have evolved from other forms of life and "God has no part."
Actually, I think it had to do with the old ladies, each wanting to be known for their particular specialties, and they feared, that if they shared the recipes, they would lose their distinction...they were really funny old ladies..
Hopefully I'll catch the next ride a little earlier.
My mom taught me to cook, and I taught my children...its a skill all children should be taught...
96yrs old...your mom had quite a long life...
Well said. I agree.
I would expect a Darwin display to do well in blueland, especially NYC. It's a jungle, ya know. It's where publik ejacation thrives.
Your scorn does you little credit.
Do you actually know anything about, say these fossils, or are you getting all of your direction from religion and your education from creationist websites?
If the latter, at least enjoy the pretty pictures.

So who would you like to see running for president next time (among those who have a chance) -- Giuliani, or someone else?
Hi hosepipe! The above is a totally tendentious remark, and rather pointless. I'd reply to the writer, but he doesn't want me to ping him anymore. But if you'd like to relay my opinion of what he said, I wouldn't mind.
What you wrote, hose, made perfect sense to me: "The people that elected Saul Alinsky's student (Hillary) ... plus Chuck Schumer ... Rangle and other Moonbats ... WILL ELECT EVEN MORE OF THEM," if given half a chance -- and the ability and willingness to lie, cheat, and steal.
Supposing their like-minded friends on the bench will bail them out if need be, and their friends in academe, in collusion with more friends in the MSM, will help them survive any challenge after the fact.
This is not idle speculation here, either: We've got plenty of history to look at for corroboration that this sort of thing can be done, and has been done. If you're a Left Progressive, you have to believe that it can be done again.
Why do you suppose our friend Ich seemingly fails to notice this?
I find your observation both astute and prescient. Thank you for sharing it with me.
No kidding! When was that? I worked in Chicago from 1989 to 2000 ... walking distance to the Berghoff.
Sorry, you were too late, all the other nutters said the same stupid thing earlier in the thread.
"I" looks like he's sporting a saggital crest, coyote. You sure he's not a Rhodesian Ridgeback?
You were *witty*...I was just slow minded today, not getting it, until you mentioned the Godfather...
One recipe that I never wanted from my hubbys grandmother was her pizza...he used to visit her on his day off from work, which was on Mondays...she would spend her weekends cooking up things for my husband(I guess because I was not a Sicilian, she figured I could not cook like she could)...she would send him home to me, with breads, and treats, and jars of homemade Minnestrone soup...and then out would come the pizza...
The first time I unloaded this shopping bag, and saw the pizza I thought it looked odd...it had a very thick crust, and looked 'furry'....I thought what an odd pizza...but I popped it into the oven to heat it up...
Then when I tasted it, it was awful...tasted too fishy...well, of course, said the hubby, thats her famous 'Sardine Pizza'....well, I cannot stand sardines...but my husband was raised on Sardine Pizzas...I guess the old grandmother, having grown up in Sicily, and not having left there until she was in her 20s, and Sicily being surrounded by water, and they use fish in everything, it was just natural to her, to make sardine pizzas...that is one pizza I can do without...
Thanks...
I'm happy to see you too. Things have been dull around here without you.
I worked at Altman Camera in 1971. Long gone. Biggest camera store in the world in its time.
Hmmm ... I think that was gone even before I got to Chicago in '89.
Sometimes cooks don't tell their secrets for the reasons you mentioned, but sometimes it's because the secrets are weird.
I know a man who puts raspberry koolaid powder in his "secret" barbecue sauce.
On the other hand, over the years I have become relatively sure that the secret to my grandmother's red beans and rice is that the cleaning lady made it.
Persistance may be the key. I finally figured out how to make the other grandma's pot roast. The "secret" is the cut of meat -- chuck blade roast.
And sometimes blind luck. Turns out she actually gave her special cookie recipe to a member of the family who never mentioned it because she didn't realize it was an issue.
And then again, maybe it's hopeless. My husband and I can cook exactly the same recipe but it never comes out the same. Something about the way we stir or something.
Thanks...
I think you make a lot of good points...my mom made the best pie crust I ever had, and the best dumpling, and she taught me how to make them...yet my pie crust never turns out as flaky as hers did, and my dumplings are never as light....
Yet, I wager, I make the best lasagne of just about anyone...
We all have our special dishes, I guess, that we can make better than anyone else...
