Stupid decision.
Still, in this day and age, can you fuly blame him?
All the bad ones are, in hindsight.
I disagree. It was not stupid. Just sad.

Have you, personally, got the balls, to do right, in the face of all adversity? How much of your secure life, are you willing to risk?
But to know those were the choices he'd've had to know the future.
Hindsight is perfect, eh?
Let's see, live girl and busted reputation, or dead girl and busted reputation?
Stupid decision.
--- --- --- --- ---
You conveniently forgot the most likely scenario: Live girl and intact reputation.
His decision was based on sound logic and high probability.
The mother is to blame for this mess.
She would have just as likely blamed him if he actually tended the daughter, probably accusing him of all types of bad things, since the mother would then have never known the parallel universe where he daughter died.
Maybe. But try this one...
Clive rescues Abby and as he's driving her to the nearest constabulary, he's sighted with the child in his car and a constable pulls him over. His explanation for why that child was in his car is not believed and he winds up doing prison time for kidnapping. In today's hysterical climate, I don't think this scenario is far-fetched at all.
