In the case of Afghanistan, we have some rights because we presumably liberated them from the Taliban.
But I guess more to the point, we must ask ourselves, can we as neighbors in the world stand by while another culture abuses its citizens? Should we permit other cultures to sacrifice virgins, molest children, etc. when the modern world has moved to a higher plane of justice (wherein justice is sought for all). Should we try to abolish slavery when it is permitted under existing native laws because we have come to see the horror of it.
I know what I believe, but it is a very large question and I am sure many opinions abound.
AS far as I know, Islam is the only religion that insists the only conversion permissible is to Islam, and that no one may leave that religion on pain of death.
Scientology may run a close second, followed by the weirdos who "jumped" on the pasing comet, and Jim Jones followers.
ANY "religion" which must use fear or death by execution or murder to keep its members is seriously flawed.
Christians are told to preach the Gospel, not convert by force;but Muslims are tasked with forcing the whole world into SUBMISION.Big difference.
This is totally independent of why we are there. We are there for our own security. Having said that I am outraged when I read stuff like this and think our government should do something to free this man in this country or in any country. A swat team should go in and rescue him. But it's a separate issue from having troops in the country. This goes on in Saudia Arabia and other muslim countries and is not unique to Afghanistan.
well then, make an argument why we should not have installed some secular dictator in Afghanistan after we toppled it, who would give us basing rights and use Saddam like force to supress the islamo-crazies where warranted?
They are so deceived...one day they'll all understand how deceived they've been.
"Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders," 2Th 2:9
"And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved." 2Th 2:10
"And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:" 2Th 2:11
Because we are promoting democratization not dictatorships. Over the long haul it's in our best interests recognizing that there will be growth pains. Transformation is never easy.
yes, but that argument only works - if we actually get something that can be called a democracy in the end game. are the indigenous peoples capable enough to support it? do those who rise to leadership ranks in the political class support it?
we shall see....
and I will add - was it better to have the Shah in Iran, or what we have there now?
"...it's in our best interests recognizing that there will be growth pains. Transformation is never easy."

I understand your reasoning, but as a Christian I'm praying hard and mad as heck. I can't help but believe this is a faith issue for us. We can't leave a BROTHER in CHRIST to be persecuted if we can stop it.
ATTN!!
This story on Brit Hume's Fox News right now!
Some Italian leader is saying Berlusconi should withdraw all Italian troops from Afghanistan if the Afghans don't let this guy go!

"our troops are still dying over there.. and for what?"
For the imposition of Shar'ia as law, it appears.
"We need to stand up for this man's right to convert and NOT pull out just when Karzai's govt needs us the most..."
I haven't advocated pulling out. No need for All-Caps.
As long as Shar'ia is the law of Afghanistan, a real 'democracy' is impossible. The coalition should've never allowed it in the first place.
