Christian Convert Faces Execution in Afghanistan
Middle East Times ^ | March 19, 2006

KABUL -- An Afghan man faces the death penalty for converting to Christianity, an Afghan supreme court judge said on Sunday.

Supreme Court Judge Ansarullah Mawlavizada said that Abdul Rahman, who converted from Islam to Christianity, is in police custody and that he could face the death penalty if he refused to become a Muslim again.

Abdul Rahman was detained two weeks ago after his relatives reported to the police about his conversion which is forbidden under Islamic Sharia law.

"Yes that's true, a man has converted to Christianity. He's being tried in one of our courts," Supreme Court judge Ansarullah Mawlavizada said, adding that his trial began early last week.

He said the man could face the death penalty if he refused to revert to Islam as Sharia law proposes capital punishment for any Muslim who converts to another religion. Afghanistan's constitution states: "No law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam."

If sentenced, the man will be the first to be punished for conversion since the ouster of the Taliban who introduced and implemented tough Sharia law.

The hardline Taliban regime was toppled by a US-led invasion in late 2001 for not handing over Al Qaeda chief, Osama Bin Laden, wanted for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Sure...like honor killings. If your daughter goes to the movie with an infidel, cut her throat.

If she is raped, stone her as an adulterer.

This cannot be made into a war of religion. If it is, then we have to worrry about the guy next door, or the guy in the next cube over. We have to remain in Afganistan and Iraq for many many years, before this type of behavior and rule can be dimished. If this man is truly a Christian, and does not deny that fact, he will spend eternity in the Kingdom of Heaven. There are many many here in the US who would openly deny Christ in order to keep living. I would like to meet this man, for he is truly his brother's keeper.
God Bless him, if he does not revert.........

I'm waiting to hear the outrage from Washington...

I also understood that the war on terror requires some clear doctrine. And one of the doctrines that I laid out was, if you harbor a terrorist, you're equally as guilty as the terrorist. And the first time that doctrine was really challenged was in Afghanistan. I guess the Taliban didn't believe us -- or me. And so we acted. Twenty-five million people are now free, and Afghanistan is no longer a safe haven for the terrorists.

President Discusses War on Terror and Operation Iraqi Freedom - March 20, 2006

25,000,000 24,999,999 people are now free.

And Afghanistan is no longer a safe haven for terrorists - now its anti-conversion-to-Christianity force has the force of law behind it.

To be fair though, we don't know how this case will resolve.

I am amazed at the courage of this man...

I read on Fox News that when the prosecutor said to him "I will drop charges if you return to Islam; or else faith the death penalty"

To which the man replied a firm "No, I am a Christian"

What a peaceful religion...LOL... A satanic religion wouldn't won't anyone alive within their culture believing in Jesus...tooooo many converts would follow...so that culture must stamp 'em out...this shouldn't surprise any of us.

Can you see a Christian demanding death to a muslim? Of course not...'cause we'd be praying for them allowing Jesus to convert him/her. Conversion would follow...that's the Power of Our Lord. ;o)

You wouldn't believe whom Our Lord is having me pray for right now...

at the very least it's progressed from no-courts, instant execution to this kangaroo court (a.k.a. Shariah court) -- not much, but still a progress. Afgh isn't near religious freedom yet, but it's moving there. We need to stand up for this man's right to convert and NOT pull out just when Karzai's govt needs us the most...

Exactly. This is a very disturbing story. I am in prayer for this gentleman. Where is the U.N. in all of this???? They should be speaking loud and clear on this matter. I would also like to hear more from our Administration concerning this. Pres. Bush should personally call Karzai. The Pope should speak out, etc....

This cannot be made into a war of religion.

It already is...declared by islam on the non-muslim world. We can refuse to believe it, but it will never go away. Islam means submission...and, in islam, their job will never end until we are all converted, subjugated as submissive dhimmies, or killed.

I'm sure there is a lot of pressure being exerted to not proceed with the execution.

Historically we did the same thing during the dark ages. The Reformation ultimately led to this ending. The Reformation though began with members of that religion seeking to reform it, are there any prominent muslims seeking to reform that religion?

There is absolutely nothing positive to be gleened from this. From AP:

"The Bush administration issued a subdued appeal Tuesday to Afghanistan to permit a Christian convert on trial for his life to practice his faith in the predominantly Muslim country.
The State Department, however, did not urge the U.S. ally in the war against terrorism to terminate the trial. Officials said the Bush administration did not want to interfere with Afghanistan's sovereignty."

BUSH DOESN'T WANT TO INTERFERE WITH AFGHANISTAN'S SOVEREIGNTY??!!?!

I think this is the final straw. The Republicans deserve to lose it all this fall. They are clearly not the party the made themselves out to be. Bush is a useless idiot. I'm joining the legions running from the hemorrhaging corpse of the GOP. May it rest in pieces.

Hope your joking. They don't have a problem having Christians dying for them, but won't let their citizens become one.

I agree that such laws are unkind and unjust. Did we sign up to bring "justice" to their oppressed minorities? Even our country has a hard time accepting those who reject our fundamental beliefs and yet live among us. We lock up polygamists, prostitutes, people who possess forbidden plants, etc. At Waco, we addressed a tax issue. Why can they not have a law that enforces the widely held values and religious beliefs of their people?

Amen to that!

Make the same offer to all Afghani's who want to convert and watch this law be changed when the "Best and Brightest" want out of that country.

I'm a little fuzzy on the respect for other religions thing.

Cartoons of a revered leader - deemed so utterly disrespectful that Muslims riot for weeks.

Man converts to Christianity - he must be killed.

that is indeed one response - offer him asylum in the US.

if we had any stones, the other option would be to use US special forces to take out this Afghan supreme court judge - to quietly send a blunt message.

Okay. Everyone join me in the MSM mantra.

ISLAM IS THE RELIGION OF PEACE.

Where is the MSM on this? Where is the outrage by Amnesty International? Where is Bono when you need him?
