This week on After Words, Harvey Mansfield, professor of government at Harvard University, explains his answer to the question, "What is manliness?"
Using historical, philosophical, and political examples, Professor Mansfield traces the evolution of the word's definition from ancient times to its current meaning in today's gender-neutral society.
He is interviewed on his new book, Manliness, by author and feminist Naomi Wolf, who has also written books on gender and society including Promiscuities: The Secret Struggle for Womanhood, and her most recent book The Treehouse: Eccentric Wisdom from My Father on How to Live, Love, and See, will be published in paperback this May.
After Words this weekend -- C-Span -- Saturday at 9 pm ET and Sunday at 6 & 9 pm ET.

They ought to come over to FreeRepublic to find out.
"Dr. Mansfield is a distinguished scholar as an interpreter of liberalism and as an interpreter of Machiavelli," says Jack Barlow, professor of politics at Juniata. "He also plays an important role in today's culture because many of his students have gone on to influential positions in government, higher education and journalism."

A man sees what needs to be done and does it.
You took the words right out of my hands, Liz. I was about to say that I'll send them my picture if they want to know. Maybe the other FR men should send their pictures too.
If you have to ask, you'll never BEGIN to know.
Distinguished and liberal? Contradiction in terms.
The onslaught of porn is responsible for deadening male libido in relation to real women, and leading men to see fewer and fewer women as porn-worthy.
a man doesn't cry about thing. a man knows "It is what it is" and let me figure out a way to fix it. My boss is an ex-marine, he knows the true meaning of get it done.
Wolf is 100% right on this issue. How are children and families better off from 50 years of mainstreaming porn?

Dr. Reisman's story is heartbreaking. Her daughter Jennie was raped at 10 by a 13-year-old boy. The perp was heavily involved in porn from his father's collection, and he had abused other children as well. Jennie died from a brain aneurysm in her early 20's, leaving behind a husband and baby daughter. The trauma from being raped likely messed up Jennie's brain chemistry. And that picture you see on the homepage is Reisman holding Jennie when she was a baby (she'd be about 50 if alive).
