Allard's linking of senator, terror "out of bounds"
The Denver Post ^ | 3/16/06 | Anne C. Mulkern

Posted on 03/16/2006 9:39:15 AM PST by Millee

Activist groups, bloggers and Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean on Wednesday castigated Sen. Wayne Allard for saying that another senator sides with terrorists.

In an interview first broadcast Monday, Allard told Denver radio station KOA-AM reporter Roger Hudson that Sen. Russ Fein gold, D-Wis., "has time and time again taken on the side of the terrorists that we're dealing with in this conflict."

Allard, R-Colo., made the comment when asked his thoughts on Feingold's introducing a resolution in Congress to censure President Bush because of the domestic wiretapping program by the National Security Agency. Feingold's proposal has not received any support in the Senate.

"It is completely out of bounds to suggest that anyone demanding accountability is siding with terrorists," Dean wrote to people on the Democratic Party e-mail list.

And ProgressNowAction.org, a Colorado liberal website, called on Allard to apologize, calling his remark "despicable."

Allard on Wednesday told The Denver Post that Feingold is "becoming more and more extreme in his positions. The whole issue is (that) what he's proposed in trying to censure the president is unconstitutional. It's never been done before. Maybe one time before."

Censure is a congressional reprimand of a president. Andrew Jackson was censured in 1834, the only time it has happened.

Allard declined to answer other questions about the matter, saying he was late for a hearing and would talk later. He could not be reached later in the day, but his office re-released a statement it had given Tuesday to a liberal radio program.

"I have tremendous respect for and share Senator Feingold's determination to protect the First Amendment rights of every U.S. citizen," the statement reads in part. "However, in case of the NSA's surveillance of terrorists, I think Senator Feingold is barking up the wrong tree. We should be looking for new ways to better track and apprehend terrorists, not punishing the president for fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities."

Allard did not address the statement he made about Feingold siding with terrorists.

"Senator Allard's comments were unfortunate," Feingold said in a statement Wednesday. "Supporters of the illegal domestic- spying program know they don't have a legal leg to stand on, so they are reduced to questioning the patriotism of those who point out the simple truth that the president is breaking the law."

Allard didn't say Feingold was unpatriotic. He said that the position he takes on issues are the same as the terrorists would take, i.e. that he "sides with the terrorists".

If Dean thinks that taking the same side as a terrorist on an issue automatically makes you unpatriotic, then that is his view, and he should answer for it or explain why the democrats are so unpatriotic, since they take many positions that are identical to those taken by terrorists.

The fact is that sometimes a terrorist may actually take the RIGHT side of an issue, so you wouldn't be wrong to take the same side.

Allard, Wayne (R - CO) PHONE: (202) 224-5941
Web Form: allard.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?

Call Senator Allard and let him know that you support him and are proud of him. Tell him NOT to retract his statement. It is time the Republicans stood up for their beliefs and stuck to them.

I have heard the most outrageous statements made this past year against our country, our President and our Troops. Not once did any of the scum retract a word.

The gentleman that answered the phone was pleased to hear support for Senator Allard. Just call, it only takes a second and it is good for the country.

I have an "in" with Senator Allard--he is my nephew's father-in-law.
He, and his wife, Joan, are really good people!
I am glad he is getting this more national visibility.
I don't think he will back down; he may soften the wording though.

What a moron! Should we add FDR to the censure too?

No doubt the FDR administration had stations listening for radio transmissions to our enemies and I have no doubt that they listened to every overseas phone call to Germany and Japan as well.

Softening the wording WOULD BE backing down. Please call and tell him to stand his ground.

Well, well, well. The President won't fight, but Senator Allard will. DON'T APOLOGIZE, you are right and he is wrong.

If the Dims keep demanding an apology, maybe that will finally get DPW out of the headlines.

The President is a bit busy to become involved with these school yard bully fights. It is the responsibility of the supporters of this country...and that includes the CONgress critters and US - you and me.

Like his own censure? Like making people understand that intercepting Al Qaeda communications is not a criminal act? Like trying to persuade more than 30% of the American people that the Iraq War is right?

Oh silly me, yep, his latest education plan is way more important than defending himself and rallying the people to support the GWOT.
