MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The historic Peabody Hotel's grand ballroom felt more like a locker-room Saturday morning as the Southern Republican Leadership Conference kicked off its second day. But was the game plan just for 2006?
As the morning's first speaker, Sen. George Allen woke up the slightly sleepy GOP crowd with a speech quite familiar to Virginians who have watched him win races for the House, the governorship, and, most recently, the Senate over the last 20 years.
He harkened the words of his heroes: Ronald Reagan, Thomas Jefferson, and his dad, the late football coach George Allen, Sr. He called the audience his "teammates" and delivered big-applause lines against taxes, federal bureaucracy, and amnesty for illegal aliens.
Dick Wadhams, Allen's chief of staff, said the speech was "as good as I've ever seen him," noting that Allen's remarks were pretty standard stump fare for him.
Allen got standing ovations before and after his roughly 15-minute speech, and then he was the one standing for the next hour and half. A couple of television interviews from the back of the room -- with potential 2008 rival Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas speaking on the stage behind him from across the room no less -- were followed by a growing pack around Allen in the hallway outside the room.

Jeb Bush ruined his chances with his failure in the Terri Schiavo case.
Does anyone know where I can find the text of his speech?
Still, kudos to him for talking about the issues the base wants to hear about - spending, immigration, etc.
His replied - 'That's just reflective of the weakness of the field.' Excellent.
Anyway, his major issue is having been a lobbyist. I wonder if he ever had to register for lobbying for a foreign nation?
I will NEVER EVER vote for someone like Romney or Rudy.
I will NOT vote for any canidate for president who supports abortion or gun control.
If someone is not social conservative, then they will not get my vote.
He played football in high school and college.
In college he suffered a knee injury and that ended his career.
Depends upon where and what type of lobbying he did. Each state has different requirements and Congress has even more requirements in regard to who must register and when.
"Also true about McCain, who wanted to "close the gun show" loophole in response to September 11."
Yes you are correct ... I don't think any of the crop of Repbs are pro-2nd ... this will be a bleak '08 election I fear.
Okay, you win the trophy for the dumb@$$ statement of the week.
I don't care if you don't like him. That's your problem.
But if you think he's a "marshmallow" you're simply misinformed.
Still, this time you spelled "marshmallow" correctly. So there's hope for you yet.
You have heard incorrectly. There are a couple of stories going around from people who will never be satisifed that a candidate or politician actually thinks something through.
See this post from last year regarding the Assault Weapons Ban.
P8riot can clarify this, but I also believe there was concern last year over a vote regarding allowing gun manufacturers to be sued. If not that it was another 2nd Amendment issue.
On the surface it looked as though Allen was anti-2nd Amendment in his vote, and the usual suspects were up in arms (so to speak). But when you looked at the bill, his reason for voting against it was that Feinswine inserted an amendment to reauthorize the Assault Weapons Ban.
Bottom line, when you have the facts you won't have to worry about George Allen and the 2nd Amendment.
I should have read all the posts before I responded to your post...
He was the quarterback on the UVA football team. Doesn't that count? Heck I'm a Hokie and I think that counts.
True, he never played pro ball. And he never said he did.
His father however, was one of the NFL's great coaches.
Hes so anti 2nd amendment he passed a pretty permissive CCW law when he was governor of virginia, much to the shrieking of democrats.
Plenty of people are rino-trigger happy on this board.
Allen played football at the University of Virginia, he was quarterback.
Is ru-486 the morning after pill?
Im curious gipper, if mike pence isnt running in 2008, who would you vote for.
