Jailhouse Jihadists
New York Post ^ | 03/10/2006 | Staff

March 10, 2006 -- Mayor Bloomberg yesterday all but fired Imam Umar Abdul-Jalil as head of ministerial services at the city's Department of Correction. But no honor accrues to the mayor: He had no choice.
Abdul-Jalil was iced after The Post revealed a series of hate-laced public remarks from the imam last year.
"We know that the greatest terrorists in the world occupy the White House," Abdul-Jalil was caught on tape saying.
He insisted Muslims are being "set up" - jailed just because they're Muslims and tortured in government prisons. "Zionists" are manipulating the news.

"The Madrid Attacks: Results of Investigations Two Years Later"
By Javier Jordán, Robert Wesley
ARTICLE SNIPPET:
"On Thursday, March 11, 2004, 10 rucksacks packed with explosives detonated in and around Madrid, causing the death of 191 people and injuring 1,800 more. Two days later, the police had detained the first suspects, and within three weeks had broken up the nucleus of the network that planned the attacks. Seven of the members decided to commit suicide rather than surrender to the police forces closing in on the group's hideout. At least five members were lucky enough to elude capture and exited the country. One of the escapees, Mohamed Afallah, met his end in a May 2005 suicide operation in Iraq (El País, June 16, 2005).
Two years after these events, enough information is available through police investigations to allow for a clear deconstruction of the jihadist network. This analysis will focus on three aspects of this network: 1) origins of the network and its relations with al-Qaeda in Europe; 2) profiles of its members; and 3) operational characteristics of the network.
Origins of the Network
There are essentially six important stages and features concerning the emergence and evolution of this network:"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The man, identified by police as Mark Mechniek, 22, of the 5400 block of South Laramie Avenue, allegedly walked through an airfield gate staffed by a Department of Aviation security officer at 4:17 p.m.
"My understanding is that a vehicle was passing through" the gate at the time the intruder walked through, Abrams said. Whether the vehicle obscured the view of the security officer on duty, allowing the man to enter unnoticed, is one under investigation, she said."

Meningococcal Disease and International Travel
This information is current as of today, March 10, 2006, 01:27:32 AM
Updated: March 9, 2006
Released: February 15, 2006
Meningococcal disease, caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis occurs worldwide and is a serious, sometimes fatal disease. Serogroup A meningococcal disease transmission regularly peaks in the sub-Saharan African "meningitis belt," which extends from Mali to Ethiopia, during the dry season (December through June). The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently reporting outbreaks of N. meningitidis serogroup A in two countries in the meningitis belt: Sudan and Niger. In addition outbreaks of meningococcal disease serogroup A are being reported in 2 districts in north-eastern Uganda (Nakapiripirit, and Moroto) and from 4 divisions of West Pokot, Kenya (Alale, Chepareria, Kachelila and Kasei), two countries that border the meningitis belt.
WHO and other international partners are assisting the Ministries of Health of all 4 countries in responding to the outbreaks.
Travelers to the meningitis belt in sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season or to areas currently experiencing outbreaks of meningococcal disease should be advised to receive meningococcal vaccine. Two vaccines (a polysaccharide and a conjugate vaccine) are available in the U.S. that protect against four strains of N. meningitidis (A/C/Y/W-135). The conjugate vaccine was recently approved for use in persons 11-55 years of age. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) now recommends its use for routine vaccination of adolescents at 11-12 years of age, adolescents before high school entry (15years of age), and college freshmen living in dormitories.
Meningococcal disease can include meningitis, an infection of the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain, as well as bloodstream infections. The bacteria that cause meningococcal disease (N. meningitidis) are spread through close, direct contact with an infected person that leads to exchange of saliva or respiratory and throat secretions (e.g., kissing). Of persons exposed to the bacteria, fewer than 1% become ill. The bacteria are not spread by casual contact.
Risk factors for getting meningococcal disease include immune system problems such as lack of a spleen, respiratory infections such as the flu, smoking or being around people while they smoke, indoor crowding, and close contact with an infected person. People in the same house or day-care center with a patient with meningococcal disease, or anyone with direct contact with a patient's oral secretions (such as a boyfriend or girlfriend) are at increased risk of getting disease. These people should get antibiotics to prevent them from getting the disease.
For more information about meningococcal disease, see Meningococcal Disease in Health Information for International Travel and http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/meningococcal_g.htm from the Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases.
For more information about these outbreaks, see http://www.who.int/csr/don/archive/disease/meningococcal_disease/en/index.html.

Madrid bombing probe finds no al-Qaida link
Another blow for those who think our struggle is against a group called Al-Qaeda, and that if we neutralize Al-Qaeda, everything will be all right. Europe -- and America in the years to come -- will have to get used to the concept of home-grown mujahedin. From AP, with thanks to Nicolei:
MADRID, Spain - A two-year probe into the Madrid train bombings concludes the Islamic terrorists who carried out the blasts were homegrown radicals acting on their own rather than at the behest of Osama bin Ladens al-Qaida network, two senior intelligence officials said.
Spain still remains home to a web of radical Algerian, Moroccan and Syrian groups bent on carrying out attacks and aiding the insurgency against U.S. troops in Iraq a Spanish intelligence chief and a Western official intimately involved in counterterrorism measures in Spain told The Associated Press.
The intelligence chief said there were no phone calls between the Madrid bombers and al-Qaida and no money transfers. The Western official said the plotters had links to other Islamic radicals in Western Europe, but the plan was hatched and organized in Spain. This was not an al-Qaida operation, he said. It was homegrown.

"Jamaat al-Muslimeen on Trial in Trinidad and Tobago"
By Chris Zambelis
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The ongoing legal case against Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, the founder and leader of Trinidad's and Tobago's Jamaat al-Muslimeen (Muslim Group), continues to shed light on the group's radical and criminal activities.
The 64 year-old Abu Bakr is a former police officer and Afro-Trinidadian Muslim convert born Lenox Philip. He has been a thorn in the side of the Trinidadian authorities and a fixture of Trinidadian politics since the mid-1980s. He is best known for leading over 100 members of the Jamaat in storming the National Parliament and taking the prime minister and the cabinet hostage in 1990 to protest a land ownership dispute with the government, poverty in the Afro-Trinidadian community, and state corruption. The ensuing siege set off rioting and violence in the capital of Port of Spain that resulted in scores of deaths and injuries and heavy damages. It also left an indelible mark on Trinidadian politics that is still felt today.
He and others involved in the coup attempt escaped prosecution and subsequent imprisonment after negotiations to end the hostage standoff resulted in a general amnesty for him and his organization.
Abu Bakr's latest antics have led to his arrest and incarceration since November 2005 on terrorism and weapons charges. The latest charges implicate Abu Bakr in a string of bombings that hit Port of Spain and St. James in 2005. He is also accused of ordering the murder of former members of the Jamaat that were expelled or split from the group because of ideological differences or shifts in allegiance to rival Afro-Trinidadian Muslim groups (Tobago Express, January 20; Trinidad Guardian, January 28, 2005).
Over the years, the Jamaat has been tied to extensive criminal activity that includes narcotics and weapons trafficking, kidnapping for ransoma growing problem in Trinidad and a favorite tactic of urban street gangsmoney laundering, and extortion. In fact, many observers count the Jamaat alongside Trinidad's most notorious street gangs in terms of criminal prowess. The Jamaat is also known to wage turf battles with rival groups for influence over territory."
