Just where did the name Pommies come from?

There is a theory it stems from the earliest days of European settlement in Australia.

Being a pommy penal colony, the prisoners wore "Prisoner of Her Majesty" or "POHM" on their back.

Just where did the name Pommies come from?

It may have come from pomegranate, pommes, the French word for potatoes, or POM, meaning "permit of migration," a sort of "green card."
