IT IS surely a paradox that the United States, the champion of free markets and the globalist ethos, snubs a takeover deal linked to the UAE, its staunchest ally in the Middle East and a state whose very social DNA suffuses its openness to foreign business, people and, above all, ideas.If any city defines globalisation in the bigoted, paranoid post-9/11 world, where even religion and culture are existential weapons of war in the latest East-West schism, it is Dubai. Total agreement from me. If people are willing to pay a coyote $2k, we should be able to create a legal means and let the marketplace price it. My concern is that those who are on a waiting list and doing it legally should be shown preference or be rewarded for doing it right. Equitable treatment is important. Likewise, those that illegally crossed should be penalized. Economically. I do not want to build additional holding facilities and hire government guards.
When the next mushroom cloud arises over one of these ports managed by a US firm, it will breath new life into the issue.
In fact, my family has lived here for three-or four, depending upon which side of the family you look to-generations, so I doubt that I sound like Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies.
Tell me though, if President Bush actually does something to stem the flow of illegal immigration-I know, I know, enough with the comedy-what will happen?
