Muslim fury over prison food

BRITAIN - Muslim prisoners at a Midland jail are boycotting meals after a rogue kitchen worker was caught filling their halal curries with unholy ham.

Prisoners at HMP Blakenhurst received a written apology from the Prison Service after the discovery and Imams were on hand to console distraught Muslims.

Wasim Zafar, aged 19, from Alum Rock, spoke out after visiting his relative in the Howell Drive Category B prison.

"He was very depressed and had lost a lot of weight because he has not been eating much since he found out what had happened with the curries," he said. "He feels he can't trust anyone again after finding out such a disgusting problem with the food."

And Wasim's brother Anis, aged 27, who had also visited the prison, explained why including ham in the halal curry caused such anguish.

He said: "This is the ultimate insult to any Muslim. All the food we eat has to be blessed."

"This has really messed up the heads of anyone who ate the unholy meat. Religion is central to any Muslims life and this shows total disrespect to our religion."

Islam decrees that followers cannot eat meat from a pig as it creates "lowliness in character and destroys moral and spiritual faculties in a man".

It is unknown how long the prison kitchen worker had been contaminating the halal food.

The Prison Service admitted there had been an incident at the HMP Blakenhurst, which houses 1,070 inmates, and that the prisoner, who was caught throwing tinned ham in the curries, had been punished.

"We can confirm that officials at HMP Blakenhurst discovered that a prisoner had contaminated halal food," said a spokesman. "The person responsible has been disciplined and everyone who ate any of the food was sent a letter of apology and Imams based at the prison were on hand to deal with any issues that have arisen."

There are currently an estimated 4,500 Muslim prisoners in jails in England and Wales with each prison offering halal food and special measures for prayers.

We need to send Sheriff Joe from Arizona over there to handle the situation. Check out this thread on how he's handling illegal Mexicans: Sheriff Joe

The Brits learned from the Sepoy Mutiny not to gratuitously insult another religion.

The Sepoy Mutiny
"The growing Indian discontent with British rule erupted on May 10, 1857. The sepoys, who were Indians trained by the British as soldiers, heard rumors that the cartridges for their new Enfield rifles were greased with lard and beef fat. Since the cow is sacred to Hindus, and the pig is abhorrent to Muslims, all the sepoys were outraged, and they mutinied. Although initially the mutiny was spontaneous, it quickly became more organized and the sepoys even took over the cities of Delhi and Kanpur."

The rumors they had heard were true.

Perhaps someone made a boo boo in interpreting the Koran... NOT eating pork products causes the character flaws!

The person quoted in your first sentence was identified in the article as ANIS. Perfect name for an Islamonazi, no?

The was an old TV commercial about Spam, maybe 40 years ago. A line in that commercial went like this"

"Good cooks use Spam just like ham, only more often"!

I will admit to using Spam. In my Boy Scout days, we used to go on overnight hikes and a can of Spam was a staple. Cooked it up for breakfast. And ate it.

"And do Jewish prisoners always get kosher food?
And do we do this no-ham-to-Muslims routine in U.S. jails?
And do vegetarian prisoners get special diets? "

Yes, pretty much.

I used to work with a Jewish guy. When we were going through the cafeteria line, he'd point to the ham in the tray and ask the server for "some of that penguin meat." Yes, he was a reform Jew.

In Saudi Arabia in the early 1980s, the U S Army Commissary on the embassy compound in Jeddah sold all sorts of pork products. Eventually commissary management noted that there were an awful lot of pork products going missing, so they had to issue ration cards for the embassy staff and military assignees. That stopped the pilfering. The pork products were disappearing out the back door, thanks to the Eritrean employees, who are Christians; they sold what they didn't eat to the Filipinos.

We took a great deal of pleasure BBQing pork products on the balconies of our quarters during ramadan, before sundown.

Two years ago, on a road trip, we stopped to tour the Spam Museum. What a hoot!

I will admit to using Spam. In my Boy Scout days, we used to go on overnight hikes and a can of Spam was a staple.

Ate it, AND liked it!

Last week our local market had Spam on sale. It was still more per pound than real ham.

Times have changed, as I used to always have a can or two in the cupboard for cheap eats, or for an impromptu weekend fishing or hunting trip.

Spam, saltines, Velveeta (doubled as trout bait) packs of Maneichevitz (SP) dried soup mix (long skinny cellophane tubes of pasta, bullion, seasoning, split peas, and veggies) and a can or two each of sardines & Vienna sausage for camping. All of it now costs more than 'real food' except the saltines.

Let them starve then. Or do it like in Saudi- their families can feed them!

I can't eat spam at home.

It's just not the same with out all the burnt ash bits in it.

I would feed them exclusively on stale bread and warm water...I would also file a complaint with whoever is sending me so many live prisoners.

The Spam sure tasted better cooked over a fire (not hot coals) so you would get it a little scorched and the ashes did always add to the flavor. Your hand would get a little burned from holding the frying pan over the fire (you had to keep the fire small) and the hot grease would splatter on your hand and arm.

If we were real lucky on a hike, someone would bring in a car to the campsite and meet us there with some eggs. Spam AND eggs, now that was living on a hike.

That was a pretty darn good breakfast out in the sticks. The grease and the smokey taste of the Spam all bring back some great memories.

Why would you even tell them they had been eating ham? You're just asking for trouble.
