The was an old TV commercial about Spam, maybe 40 years ago. A line in that commercial went like this"
"Good cooks use Spam just like ham, only more often"!
I will admit to using Spam. In my Boy Scout days, we used to go on overnight hikes and a can of Spam was a staple. Cooked it up for breakfast. And ate it.

Ate it, AND liked it!
Last week our local market had Spam on sale. It was still more per pound than real ham.
Times have changed, as I used to always have a can or two in the cupboard for cheap eats, or for an impromptu weekend fishing or hunting trip.
Spam, saltines, Velveeta (doubled as trout bait) packs of Maneichevitz (SP) dried soup mix (long skinny cellophane tubes of pasta, bullion, seasoning, split peas, and veggies) and a can or two each of sardines & Vienna sausage for camping. All of it now costs more than 'real food' except the saltines.
I can't eat spam at home.
It's just not the same with out all the burnt ash bits in it.
