03/02/06 FOX Poll: Most Oppose Port Deal; Republicans Lose Ground Thursday, March 02, 2006 By Dana Blanton PHOTOS

Most Americans oppose allowing a Dubai company to run some U.S. ports, even as a majority understands the U.S. would continue to control port security, according to a new FOX News poll. One in four sees the United Arab Emirates as a strong ally, but most either disagree or are unsure.

In addition, the poll shows Republicans have lost ground on the issue of terrorism, and by a wide margin voters now think it would be better for the country if Democrats win control of Congress in this year’s midterm election.

For only the second time of his presidency, the poll finds that President Bush’s overall job approval rating has fallen below 40 percent — today 39 percent of Americans say they approve and a 54 percent majority disapproves. Late last year the president’s approval hit a record-low of 36 percent (8-9 November 2005).

"The fault lies with the clueless people ranting without the facts."

Both positions are supported with "facts". I'm sure the opponents are swaying some. But the "ranting" proponents are doing just as much damage, maybe more because they consider their own troops targets of opportunity.

Either way, Dems gain without lifting a finger. Good Job!

TWO points:

1.) As I have mentioned NUMEROUS times, Opinion Dynamics completely blew the 2004 election -- calling the election for Kerry and missing the final spread by 5 points! [OD continues to use the same methodology/sampling techniques that it used in 2004.]

2.) To produce VALID results, pollsters must generate REPRESENTATIVE samples of 'registered' and 'likely voters' (and I would argue, 'adults'). A REPRESENTATIVE national sample of 'registered' voters would typically feature a +3 point advantage for Democrats NOT a +10 point advantage!

If you want to view a LEGITIMATE poll conducted by an icon in the polling biz, read the following analysis by Ed Goeas of THE BATTLEGROUND POLL.

PRESIDENT BUSH:
February 2006

Job Approval rating --
46% approve 52% disapprove

Likability rating --
60% approve of GWB as a person 33% disapprove

NEVER confuse the President's JA/Favorability rating with his LIKABILITY RATING. The latter is a president's MOST IMPORTANT RATING/ASSET and the BattleGround Poll is the only current pollster to produce this rating [Pollsters stopped generating the likability rating during Clinton's presidency when Clinton's JA ratings climbed to the high 50s/60s while his likability rating plummeted to the 30s!!!]

http://www.tarrance.com/battleground.html
[scroll down to the Republican Strategic Analysis]

FYI: A President's JA rating does NOT determine the outcome of midterm elections! If it did, then President Reagan's 65% JA rating in November 1986 would have prevented Republicans from going down in flames -- losing the Senate and even more ground in the House. [FYI: A month after this election, President Reagan's JA rating plummented to the 40s after the Iran-Contra scandal broke! . . . Voters are so FICKLE, which is exactly why Presidents should ignore the polls and do what they know is right!]

I'm off to a basketball game . . .

If port and terminal security is suddenly so vital, let's not wait unitl the goods hit our shores, let's take over all the ports and terminals used to load the ships headed for the USA.

How many US firms load these ships on overseas ports?*

Funny how the info on overwhelming bias of the polled was buried at the bottom of the article.

It was meant as sarcasm. This isn't a perfect world, and sometimes we have to deal with less than ideal situations. But the alternative is even worse. And that's how it is with this whole Dubai thing. Sure I would love to never ever have to deal with that part of the world, but it isn't realistic.

But cancelling the deal would have even worse ramifications. And I do believe that President Bush knows a little more about what goes on in that part of the world, than any of us here do.

As some have said, 'a no-brainer' ... as in you have to be a brainless twit to think there's no threat for future catastrophe in allowing friends/benefactors of Hamas to control facilities and have access to the security workings at U.S. Ports.

Well, you can blame those who are not posting the facts for that.

"I don't understand why "americans" who respond to these moronic "polls" are all over Bush for this and they were all as quiet as mice when Slick Willie was letting the RED CHINESE do the same thing at the ports in Long Beach. Sorry folks! I don't get it."

Because the Red Chinese didn't blow up the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, crash an airplane in Pennsylvania, blow off bombs all over the Middle East, Bali, the Philippines, etc. The Arabs and Muslim extremists have. There's an immediate and rational suspicion of Middle Eastern Arabs as de facto, real time, blood and bombs enemies. One can decide, on examination, that doesn't apply to PARTICULAR Arabs and countries, but considering the universal draw of terrorism among Muslim lands, there is a rational reflex of suspicion towards anything involving Arabs and Muslims, and US security.

China, by contrast, is a potential enemy. But there are not thousands dead and Chinese bombs going off all over the world. THAT is why Americans (not "americans") are reacting very differently to the notion of a Middle Eastern Arab sheik owning a controlling interest in port terminal unloading facilities, and the Red Chinese doing the same thing.

I firmly believe that the infiltration by the kooks from Stormfront was more successful than anyone admits. Many of the troublemakers on FR signed up around the time the Stormfronters were making announcements about taking over FR.

CBP will deploy a small team of officers to the port of Dubai, the 6th largest port operator in the world whose mission will be to target sea containers destined for the United States. Dubai Customs officials, working with CBP officers, will be responsible for screening any containers identified as a potential terrorist threat.

CPB targets the containers for screening and Dubai customs performs the screenings. Dubai customs retains overall responsibility for security. Correct?

I happen to work in a light industrial warehouse near Chicago and just today we received 4 skids (about 8 cubic yards) of boxed goods from China which, of course, was loaded in a Chinese port, sailed across the ocean and was unloaded onto a truck in an American port before being driven to our factory.

There is a certain INHERENT vulnerability in this way of doing business but the only alternative is to cut ourselves off from the global economy and live like a third world country.
